Family Vacation vs. Fun Vacation

Just curious if any of you have situations where one of you wants to either do a family trip to see your family and your spouse just wants to take a fun trip to an exciting place or the reverse, you want the exciting trip, and your spouse wants to see his/her family?

We either alternate every year OR we split the vacation half. That's what we are doing this year. My DH has a week of vacation every year, so this year we are going to the beach for 3 days and then traveling 450 miles to see family for the other 4 days.

My in laws are big on the travel like us so we usually have a family trip with them every year or 2 (twice this year). DH would rather poke his eyes out than go on a family vacation. But we always seem to take them anyway. This year the in laws are coming to Disney with us and next year it's my family that's heading to Disney. The entire family, sisters and all.

We would find a way to combine them. Of course, family makes that easy. Brother/SIL live in San Diego...Aunt cousin and others live in Florida and are avid-WDW-goers. Dad lives in Santa Cruz which is about my fave city in CA. etc.

We never make a week long trip to see family. We take our fun vacations, and make our obligatory visits to family on extra long weekends or holidays. I had enough of those family vacations when I was a kid and spent an entire week (two times a year!) sitting at the kitchen table talking and yakking. That's just not for either one of us, a few days to see family is enough.

Tried traveling with DH's parents...... (they had a timeshare)

Two words..... NEVER AGAIN!!!!!

Some may not understand, but I do not consider family to be 'vacation'.

Now, we have kind of inherited the inlaws timeshare.
We travel as a nuclear family.
Two years ago it was Destin, FL
Last year it was Arizona (Sedona, Grand Canyon)
This year it was Orlando (Universal and Kennedy)
Next year it will likely be Historic Williamsburg and DC.

When the kids were little, most of our vacations were to family. It was important for them to see the little ones more often and it was CHEAP! Sometimes we'd stop someplace for a night or two of family fun on the way. Sometimes DH and I would leave the kids with grandma for a night in the middle for a "getaway" at a nearby town.

Now we go visit family once a year between Christmas and New Years and our summer trip is reserved for fun.
