Family trip to Guatemala??

Has anyone ever taken a family trip to Guatemala? My MIL wants to take me, and my DD's (ages 7 and 5) there for Spring break... any thoughts???

not at all...she went a few years ago with friends and loved it...thought it would give the girls some culture??

I've been with my husband, but I don't know that I would take that young of kids. Lots of other places I'd take them to besides Guatemala!

My partner and I have a trip to Guatemala planned for March 2011. We will be visiting Guatemala City, Lake Atitlan, Antigua, and the Tikal region. I'm really looking forward to it!

In 2008, I took a day trip to Tikal from Belize. Tikal is amazing and by far the most interesting archeological site I have seen.

We took took a sojourn to Tikal and that area when we were in Belize. We too enjoyed Tikal but actually liked many of the archeological sites in Belize better. Tikal was very large and grand, but also quite crowded. Our time in Guatemala was only 3 days compared to 2 weeks in Belize. We liked Belize better and it is more family friendly on the whole. This is mostly attributed to the people we met and the staff at the hotels/excursions.

Sounds wonderful. I have been looking at it for Spring Break as well. Definitely Lake area, Antigua and Tikal. I have friends who have been and say it is lovely. Go for it! On the other hand, I am also looking at Panama and Honduras. So, not sure where we are going to end up.

There is no way I would take small children there especially with 2 ladies alone for a vacation. It has one of the highest crime rates in Latin America. A dear friend of ours is spending a year there teaching at an American school and she goes no where alone and you most definitely do not go out after dark. Safety is a huge daily concern. Not at all a place I would consider family friendly and safe.
