family trip...minus one child?

We booked a trip to the world for our family. One of the children is having trouble with the idea of travelling on a plane/so far from mom/etc for 5 days. What happens if one of the people on our itinerary doesn't travel with? Will we have trouble with the airline? I know we'll eat the cost, but will it stop the rest of us from travelling?

My mother was supposed to go to WDW (flying) with us and ended up getting sick 2 days before the trip. We had no problems. We had our seat selections made and thought we'd still have access to her seat but didn't. It made the seating arrangments a bit tricky but that's the only issue we had.
