I just asked my mom how to make her sweet potatoes. Here's the recipe:

*peel and cut up the sweet potatoes
*put in your pan with a little bit of water, half cup maybe
*then put in some brown sugar - a cup maybe, a cup and a half? whatever looks good. I usually pinch off about 2 inches in the bag and just dump that in
*about 2 tablespoons of margarine
*sprinkle a little tiny bit of salt
*cook until the potatoes are soft, maybe 25 minutes?
*you have to turn the light down after they boil
*then thicken the liquid with cornstarch mixed with water - maybe a tablespoon of cornstarch and 2 tablespoons of water?

Ahhh, family recipes. They're so specific! :rotfl:

(I love you, Mom!)

I knew several of my great-grandparents and in particular, my DM's DGM. Well, she was from a very very poor family in KY and made due. Her measuring spoons and cups were her palm! She would shake something in her hand and say "about this much, Honey" :p

I do have several of her handwritten recipes she did in later life and I treasure them. As hard as it is to replicate, to this day I can still see her hand and the way it looked when she was "measuring" :flower:

I just finished making my DMom's special cornbread stuffing. Before she gave me the recipe, she made me swear never to give it to my sister, she fears the results! :rotfl2:

ah Katerkat,

I've given you recipes that have been a lot more specific than that -- you know - with actual measurements in them! (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=964731&page=2&pp=15)
And you forgot that I told you to make sure that you put a lid on the pot!

I love you too, honey

My parents were both great cooks (my dad passed away almost 3 years ago) and I finally stood by them while they were cooking, grabbed whatever they were putting into the pot and measured it before they could put it in!

My great-grandmother's recipes are the ones that really crack me up. They include instructions such as "one blue cup full of sugar" and "butter the size of a hen's egg." Well, is my blue cup the same size as Grandma's? She raised her own chickens--did they lay large, extra large, or jumbo sized eggs? :rotfl:

Awww--these are so nice. DH's Grandmother was an AMAZING cook. Everything Ma (that's what she was called) made was everyone's favorite. She passed away 2 years ago, and DH is the ONLY grandchild (out of 56 :scared1: )who has any of her recipes. Before her health started failing, we would go and spend Sunday afternoons with her. DH and Ma would cook, and I would clean her living room (the heavy stuff, vaccuum, dusting, etc) bathroom.
