From the time I can remember my father had a camera in his hand. If it wasn't a still camera, it was a movie camera. Every holiday, every vacation, every milestone was documented in 8 mm or film. When I was in my teens, it was an annoyance. Camera shy relatives could not escape from my Dad's lens. When my parents died, I took "custody" of the boxes of black and white photos from his 20's including the photos that he inherited from his grandparents' childhood going forward. The black and whites turned into color photographs and when he discovered that "slides" were so much cheaper to develop, he went in that direction. For over a dozen years my brother would now and then suggest we get together and "divide" up the pictures. Of course he has as much right to them as I do but I was concerned that half of them would end up in his attic with the other half left in mine. Two years ago I bought a Cannon Cano Scan 8800 just for the purpose of scanning all of these photos. I set it up in the dining room, connected it to a new lap top with an "empty memory and spent days scanning slides, photos, documents, etc. In the end I had scanned over 2200 pictures.
The scanned photos are so much clearer than the krinkled, original black and whites. The slides do not require the big screen projector and at last I can share all of these pictures. My brother was thrilled to get his disc. Last week I sent another disc to my cousin. She was overwhelmed. My dad had taken more pictures of her childhood, her parents, grandparents, brothers and sister than her own parents did. Last night I called my second cousin whose name showed up on my caller id from two weeks ago. She sent me a link to a Facebook page that included a couple of old black and white photos that she had. I have the same ones...plus a whole lot more. I have pictures of her mother when her mother was young and through the years. I have pictures of her. I probably have more pictures of her family and extended family than she can even imagine so I made a disc for her today. I can't wait to see what she says when she gets them.
