Family goes Disney Free for One Year!

Interesting plan they have. We wouldn't boycott Disney for the reasons they stated, but the reasons are their own and I respect them. We certainly wouldn't put a time-frame on it either. If we were going to boycott a company for ethical reasons, we would boycott until changes were made regarding our concerns, regardless of how long it took.

I wonder what time of year they normally go to WDW! J/K

...Agreed. Additionally, if I were to boycott every company I had disagreements with, I probably wouldn't get out much.

Another person seeking their 15 minutes of fame... she should have just sued them for something....

Horrible piece of reporting here. They didn't give any specifics at all, instead they refer to a "flap" and "issues".

As the OP indicated, one less family to irritate me while I enjoy my vacation. These people are probably the type that complains about the cost of everything while they are on vacation anyway.

Oh well, to each his/her own. Good luck to them!

A whole boycot over a Little Einstines rebate and Princess, that just sound dumb doesnt it, her kids are going to go insane without the Disney Channel, her husband will evently watch EPSN any way, and she will be out of the loop of all the newest films.

But is their anyway to really escape disney, they have so have so many brands, it hard to keep track of them all.

I don't think it's dumb. There's a reasonably intelligent case to be made against rampant consumerism. But while Disney is an easy target for it, there are so many others who do it just as well (or badly). If you're going to boycott Disney, you should probably add every large media empire to your boycott, and as PP noted, your boycott should remain in place until the issue that caused it is resolved.

Otherwise, it's incredibly hollow.

Yeah, I'm not even sure what their issue is with Disney. It is true that every day you are basically going to see something Disney related even without trying to.
I know a lot of people were trying to be Disney free when they closed down vmk, Virtual Magic Kingdom. I don't think that worked out real well though... Disney has too big of an audience for a couple people could make a negative impact.

This is a few years old, but it is generally complate

I just thought I've give you the list of everything to need to boycott in order to make your boycott complete. I advise you copy this as writing it all down will take too much time.

I think you need to revise that list. Disney ditched most of Cap Cities' publishing right after they bought it. They don't own any of that stuff anymore. Nor do they own those scientific publications and such.

And they certainly don't own, for example, Cablevision.

So, I usually only read everything, and have never, until now posted. But this story bothers me. And here's why:

1) Did anyone else notice that this woman is the founder of a group called Parents for Ethical Marketing? As a parent, I applaud her effort, but this is clearly not a family making a statement...it's a woman making a publicity grab. Sure, the Little Einstein videos weren't "educational", but I knew that after five minutes of watching it. Neither is Spongebob. Nor is Vikings Football.

2) Did she really say that her husband having to give up Monday Night Football is a sacrifice? Huh. Give up the TV completely...give up the car...shave your head....give all your money to a church. That's sacrifice. Giving up Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and the chance to watch Brett Favre age before our very eyes like that guy from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade....that's not sacrifice.

There. I've said it, and I'm done.

My 4 year old DD recognizes classical works of music because of the Little Einsteins so in that way, I believe they are educational; otherwise, you nailed it!

+1 on this. Boycotting Disney is a bit impracticle, but c'mon they are an entertainment company...there is really no "sacrifice" involved in missing a few TV shows. Your also accomplishing very little, and your kind of an idiot to begin with if you ever thought Baby Einstein videos were "educational". To me they were stimulating in a slightly better way than watching Barney or Wiggles, using classical music instead of kiddie treacle. But educational was always a joke.

I know a guy that boycott's Disney (or at least he did, I don't see him much anymore) because they support gay marriage. He also didn't want to use his corporate American Express card because they used Ellen in their print ads. (Yep, that kind of guy.) I asked him if he watched ABC or ESPN. He said yes. I said, "not a very good boycott then".

I knew another guy once that claimed he was boycotting all GE products and wouldn't watch NBC. I asked him if he walked around all day and night with his eyes closed. When he said "no" I asked how he could use all that light being provided by their lightbulbs.

The point being...these types of boycotts are both silly and near impossible. Do you not go to see a movie if a trailer for a Disney movie is playing in front of it. Do you refuse to go into a restaurant if the bar has the football game on? Do you shun Macy's because they are playing a musak version of "Under the Sea" in the elevator? Do you pull your daughter from school because they are doing a stage production of Beauty and the Beast?

And you clearly don't hurt a company by doing something like this. You essentially are giving them free marketing. While some people might support your views, others will be turned off by it, and may seek out the company you wish to hurt.

Just silly.

I wish I could find a course, but I heard this exact same story a long time ago, maybe 9 months or a year back. It is making me wonder if it's an annual event for them.

Complain about Little Eisteins, don't watch MNFB.

i agree with many of the above comments. i find that many people take a very simplistic approach to these types of things without thinking them thru.

I'm going to make it a point of buying extra movies this year to make up for the ones they aren't buying. ( I know plenty of kids who would love a Disney movie.) And I'm going to pay for my cousin's kids to see a disney movie in the theater. (she's got five.) And I'm going to buy a few extra things on my trips too. That should make up for whatever Disney would lose with this family. I like to make a point too. I just won't make the news.

I feel the same way about vegetarians... more steak for me. LOL
Nancyprincess:

I'm usually pretty distrustful of the motives of any large corporation and there are definitely companies I don't do business with because I think they are unethical or treat their employees poorly, but in general, I think Disney does a pretty good job. Sure, there have been things I haven't agreed with or that I thought could have been handled differently, but overall I don't hesitate to give them my money.
