I know that ABD provides connecting rooms when it can, but how do they handle families of five when connecting rooms are not available? I am especially interested in Peru but in general as well. Do the parents really need to just split up for the evening? Have there been any creative solutions?

An adult / parent would be booked in each room.

Sleeping arrangements would depend on the age of your children.

Once the hotel room door is closed, no one knows where you sleep.

Karen, we are a family of 3, so not quite the same, but I can speak to the way ABD handles uneven groupings at least. One of your rooms will have three instead of two people in it. On the European trips, this is usually on a rollaway bed. When we did the Peru ABD, which was 8 years ago now, so may have changed, the rooms were much more accommodating for more than two people. For instance, we had two rooms that had three full beds in them. In another, we had two double beds, which is still better than the Europe trips.

We have been on ABDs where parents did split up because their kids were not comfortable being in a room by themselves. We've also been on ABDs where our DD ended up bunking in with other family's kids a night or two, because it felt like a sleepover. It really depends on your kids and their comfort levels and how much traveling they have done. Also your comfort level with having your kids technically unsupervised overnight. But the guides don't care where you lay your head as long as you're happy.

We did the Peru trip last year and we absolutely loved it!
In Lima, the hotel was the Marriott. There were two large connecting rooms one with a king and the other with two double beds. My three kids ages 6,9,12 fit perfectly!
In the Sacred Valley the hotel used was Sol y Luna. These were small cottages and we were given a family room. There was a king bed with an added single on the first floor with two double beds on the loft portion. In the Hotel Libertador Cusco we were given a large suite with one room with a king, another room with a double sofa bed and another room with two double beds (also 2.5 bathrooms!). The entire experience was more than we could have asked for!
