fall vacation ideas

Due to an add-on, DH and I will have quite a few points left over next year, even after our May trip. Yes, we could bank them, but we are thinking about doing a long weekend trip to one of the concierge collection resorts.

We love fall colors and weather, so I was wondering if anyone has been to any of the new england area resorts at this time of year and could recommend one of them. Or, if you have other ideas for a fall trip where we could use approximately 300 points, we are open to ideas.

I didn't use any DVC points, but I just spent 5 days in the New England area, doing a fall folliage trip.

I would recommend Burlington Vermont as THE place to stay. I couldn't get a room there, as they book early, sometimes a year in advance. I travelled thru MA, NH and ME.

You just can’t beat fall in Vermont (IMHO).

It’s difficult to predict when foliage will peak. This year it was quite late due to our hot dry weather that extended right into late September. If it hasn’t quite peaked when you’re here you can take a daytrip north…or go south if it’s better down there.

As kel3420 mentioned, the Burlington area is the place to stay. My second choice would be Stowe.

You do need to reserve early.

We just returned from the Woodstock Inn. It was outstanding! Located in central Vermont, which gives you a chance to move around a bit. They also have great facilities. Their golf course stays open until November. Nothing like golf in Vermont on a fall day. Of course a few minutes away is the Killington gondola. They are already open for skiing.

Book early, and think about the first or second weekend in October, although it's difficult to predict.
Woodstock is a lovely, quaint village which is mobbed on weekends, but very enjoyable. The Inn is great, with an excellent dining room.
The Eqinox, in Manchester, is a wonderful big old hotel, but we haven't been in the dining room for a few years. There's tons of upscale outlets in the town and it's also crowded on weekends.
The beauty of Vermont needs to be experienced by driving around the mountain area (ie, Rte 100 in central and southern VT or farther north in the Stowe area). Be adventuous and take the real back roads -- less traffic and great views. Explore the countryside on the weekends, when the villages are crowded, and do shopping on the Friday or Monday, or early morning.

VonTrappFamily Lodge (Sound of Music) in Stowe Vermont is beautiful. Its up on the mountain and has some beautiful views, bet its great with all the leaves changing colors
never there in the fall but skied alot at Stowe in the Winter

Another place that would be lovely for a fall trip would be HH. It does not have the magnitude of foliage as the NE states do but it is still a lovely place in the fall and you would get a lot more for your pts. With 300 pts you can get a large villa or several small villas and bring friends to HH. There are many planned resort activities to do and there is also bike riding, walking/hiking trails, dolphin cruises, trips to Savannah, shopping, etc

Thanks for all the suggestions. We are still discussing what we want to do, but these ideas are great!
