So there's a thread about music and your favorite bands, and I noticed that nearly EVERYONE listed Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, etc. as their favorites. Does anyone care to tell me what's SO great about them? Is it their cliche pop "punk" power ballads and poorly thought out lyrics?

Compare:

AFI- The Days of the Phoenix

I remember when I was told of story of crushed velvet,
candle wax, and dried up flowers
The figure on the bed all dressed up in roses, calling
Beckoning to sleep,
Offering a dream

words were as mystical as purring animals
The circle of rage
The ghosts on the stage appeared
The time was so tangible, I'll never let it go
Ghost stories handed down, reached secret tunnels below
No one could see me

I fell into yesterday
Our dreams seemed not far away
I want to, I want to, I want to stay
I fell into fantasy

The words were as mystical as purring animals
The circle of rage
The ghosts on the stage appeared
The time was so tangible, I'll never let it go
Ghost stories handed down, reached secret tunnels below
No one could see me

I fell into yesterday.
Our dreams seemed not far away
I want to, I want to, I want to stay.
I fell into fantasy

The girl on the wall always waited for me,
And she was always smiling
The teenage death boys
The teenage death girls
And everyone was dancing
Nothing could touch us then
No one could change us then
Everyone was dancing
Nothing could hurt us then
No one could see us then
Everyone was dancing
Everyone was dancing

No one could see me

I fell into yesterday
Our dreams seemed not far away
I want to, I want to, I want to stay
I fell into fantasy

Our dreams seemed not far away
Our dreams seemed not far away
Our dreams seemed not far away

Fall Out Boy- Dance, Dance

Dance, Dance
We're falling apart to half time
Dance, Dance
And these are the lives you'd love to lead
Dance, this is the way they'd love
If they knew how misery loved me

You always fold just before you're found out
Drink up its last call
Last resort
But only the first mistake and I...

I'm two quarters and a heart down
And I don't want to forget how your voice sounds
These words are all I have so I'll write them
So you need them just to get by

Why don't you show me the little bit of spine
You've been saving for his mattress, love

Dance, Dance
We're falling apart to half time
Dance, Dance
And these are the lives you'd love to lead
Dance, this is the way they'd love
If they knew how misery loved me

Honestly now, I'm not trying to argue with people I just want to see WHY people "love" this band SO MUCH. Their lyrics are poorly thought out, sounds like they could have wrote it in an hour tops... I just don't understand. Take a good band, lots of talent, AFI. Their lyrics flow like poetry. Their lyrics are thought out. Their music is AMAZING. The talent these guys have is absolutely phenomenal...and it makes me somewhat sad to hear all these kids going along with the "scene" and listening to FOB and whatnot when there's SO many good bands out there.

The way you feel about AFI I feel the same about Thrice. I think if you're looking for stuff with great substance and meaning, look for bands like Thrice. If you're looking for something fun to get you pumped for whatever, Fall Out Boy etc. are appropriate. To me it all depends on the moment. I mostly listen to the deep stuff though.

well i don't want to argue but i like the lyrics and the songs and so do other poeple:rockband: but i am not tring to say that the other bands aren't good they are and lyrics are fantasic and so are the songs.some poeple might prefer fall out boy to AFI or others AFI to fall out boy it doesn't really matter
i actully like lots of other bands including AFI
sorry if i upset anyone from what said

I agree, Fall Out Boy is 100% overrated. They used to be great, but as soon as they hit MTV and made a few apparances on The OC, they let it go to their heads. I met the guys back in February and we had some time to hang out, and Patrick was the nicest guy EVER, as was Andy. Pete, though, is such an @$$. He was nice at the time, but is so freaken arrogant it's sad. And all his nude pics showing up online... shouldn't he have learned the first time? How many times is he going to pose in front of his mirror and take pictures of himself like a 14-year old girl, and then let them get out? He's starving for attention, and the way he's trying to get it is REALLY lame. Fall Out Boy isn't about music anymore, they're about trying to be the next big thing, and I'm sorry but they're not. Instead of them worrying about gaining more fame with the pre-teen MTV set, they should worry about making good music.... because it's obviously been a while since they have.

There's just something about FOB's music. I guess it's easy to relate to. I mean don't get me wrong I love AFI. Miss Murder is the best! But FOB just seems like everyone in any part of the world can relate to those songs. And even songs that were written in an hour can become classics. Just songs that people can relate to are the hits I guess. Either that or the emos are taking over j/k! :rotfl:

I agree completly. 100%. I watched the two fall out boy dvd's and i can say from what i saw, Pete is a huge jerk. hes not nice at all. The whole nude pictures on his sidekick was a huge set-up. how can you not know that someone is going to find them? He also uses people in the dvd to do really extremly stupid stuff.
They are never going to be the next big thing. they dont set a good example for an age. On their dvd they were setting fire to things, getting in trouble, destroying property, and being ''inapproprite'' to say the least. :rolleyes2

now dont get my wrong, i do like there music, i just aprove of their actions. sorry if this is a tad off topic..

I "liked" them, but not anymore.. Too Emo for me..

haha...too emo?

Can't stand the Fall Out Boiz

Can't stand AFI either...

oh well...

Want music? Listen to Journey, Guns 'N Roses, Bon Jovi, Queen, Heart, Aerosmith, Enya, Boston, Blue October, Keane (I can even see a promise in Angels and Airwaves)...the list goes on. Personally, I don't care for Fall Out Boy's music, but then I'd also have to confess that I have not heard all their music either. My take on it is, lyrics are lyrics and mean everything to the writer. People can interperate them how ever they may; the artist gives the lyrics to the audience for the taking. We have the option to listen to whatever music we want. I do realize that there may be some lyrics out there that appear "pointless", "lazy", or "unthoughtful" BUT, we, as listeners, have NO idea what the REAL or TRUE meaning or reason is behind each and every set of musical lyrics. I also feel that some people do just go for what is "in" and what isn't...some people would prefer to be "cool" than listen to the lyrics that mean something to them. Refering back to my first sentence, those groups have preformed lyrics that exemplify meaning to me....what lyrics show meaning to you? With that answer you will find you're good and bad music.

Mmmmm Enya...

Uuugh. FOB. Where do I start? When I'm showing people my iPod, I cringe when they are going through the artists and see them. One good song.:sad2:

I could also go on and on about the whole emo craze. I mean jesus, I was just talking about it today with one of my friends. They were playing a ton of emo songs during lunch, and I was asking my friends, "what ever happened to rock songs being about drugs, s*x, and partying? It just seems to me that the mainstream rock has gone from a, "you cheated on me, get out of my life" attitude, to a, "I know you cheated on me but I'm sure we can work this out because I really really love you" attitude. I make fun of emo kids at school. It used to be guys would wear makeup because it was the glam rock thing. Now they do it to, "express their personality". I don't get the whole thing where they wear chick's pants and pink shirts and whatnot.

This is why when I listen to new bands, I listen to bands such as Godsmack, Nickelback, Default, Saliva, Kid Rock, etc. Bands such as Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance can fall off a cliff for all I care.

Okay, done flaming now.:)

I don't like Fall Out Boy much. I don't even think their lyrics make much sense. I don't see the big deal in a lot of popular bands now, but to each his own.

i don't do what is "in" i just like them for the music i used to be a big red hot chili peppers fan then they came big in the UK i've sort of disliked them, plus no one in my class have heard of fall out boy and am happy about that .ok there 100% overated but i still like there music

I agree with the idea that it is good "pump me up music" but actually many of the lyrics are quite violent and disturbing if you listen to them for real...

I like FOB on occassion and when it's on the radio.

Bands I like are punk-pop and a little emo such as Yellowcard (   ), Avril Lavigne (Not as much, but still do, I confess), Something Corporate, Panic! At the Disco (SOOO catchy, but won't listen to most of it b/c it's disturbing).

Not a big MCR fan tho...only "I'm Not Ok" - again, too violent and disturbing.

I like the whole "You broke my heart but I still love you" music Munky! Hahahaha, can't help it.

I made a CD of some of my favorite songs...and they ranged from Yellowcard to Something Corporate to Disney to Michael Buble to Panic! to O-Zone (YESSSS Romanians!!!) to Coldplay to Damien Rice. Shrugs...I have tons of different tastes in music...though I tend to stay away from rap and country unless A)Dancing or B)It's really good/pop-ish country.
