Fall HS sports train all summer long?

Welcome to High School Sports! Start working on carpools.

My DS will be a Junior in the fall and football has already kicked in, or in theory never really ended as they were in the weight room a couple of days a week all winter. Now it is everyday after school until 5 plus he has a "0" period that starts at 6:45 a.m. all school year for the athletes.

When school gets out, weight training/conditioning every morning from 7-10:30 with a week break following school release and the week of 4th of July, then they get the first week of August off. The 2nd week of August begins "Double Days" where they practice in the AM's & PM's and this carries to the first day of school where they go back to "0" periods and afterschool practice. There is also Football camp in July for 3 days.

Thankfully DS is now driving as I spent the last 2 summers hauling him around or arranging carpools. He also has a summer job at the local water park that is 15 miles from home, so our summers are really busy with him, I felt like all my lunch hours and breaks were taken in the car. We would not allow DS to be in a car with another teen driver, so if I couldn't find another parent it was on me and DH to get him to and from. We live 6 miles from the HighSchool.

Good luck and I hope things work out with DD and Dad.

To the OP, I would definitely look into a carpool for the kids. The reason they have them going in for open gym time, so often, is that they really need to condition before they start really working on practice. It's not just something to do, it is for the team to have players that are in the shape they need to be to compete. I would be more concerned if they didn't have a regular conditioning schedule.

Actually, it's my understanding that the Open Gym days are to watch how the girls play and how they work together to make the decision for who would make the team. They have a regular conditioning schedule they need to follow on the off days and the few weeks they have off. The list for each day starts out slow and gets progressively into more work. For example--the first off day (Sunday, 6/11), they need to work on ball handling, 100 free throws, and jog for 20 minutes. By the end, it includes sprint training, more cardio workouts, and more free throws.

I'm hoping there are some girls she knows that are trying out so we can get the car pool sorted out. I've gone to part-time for the summer and now we've gone from me having two free afternoons a week with dd gone to New Mexico (i.e. time for me to do some painting, cleaning, and have a garage sale) to me taking an hour off here and an hour off there to tote dd around. NOT what I had in mind. I know, I know--I'll be supportive but it's thrown a monkey wrench in my plans for a relaxing and productive summer and some time alone with dh. I'm still coming to grips with that so thanks for letting me vent somewhere that dd won't hear.
