Can anyone recommend a good fake tan? I've got milky white skin and, not being in the first flush of youth and a long way from slender, I thought I'd look a lot better if the skin was brown rather than white when I start wearing summer clothes! But I don't want to end up orange or streaky etc. Any advice anyone please?

California Tan makes a good product and so does Clarins.

The most important thing is to exfoiliate first. I usually do this two or three times before I apply a tanning color on. It cuts down on brown patches and leaves the skin acceptable to the lotion.

Wash your hands thoroughly.

You can try the one second fake bake, which gives you a mist and it lasts up to a week! That will get you started on developing a good tan for the summer.

I would suggest Fake Bake or the Body Shop self tan, they are both very easy to useand give great results however I would suggest you wear gloves to apply as you can end up with very brown hands!!! :teeth:

Which is a good exfoliant please? Have never heard of FakeBake - sounds fun though!! Thanks for the tip about the gloves!! ;)

Could anyone please tell me if any of the department stores stock Fakebake - I know Harvey Nicks does, but they're not handy for me. I've also seen it on the internet, but I'd prefer to buy it from a shop. Thanks.

I've been using L'Oreal Sublime Bronze, which has given me a really lovely tan. If it wasn't for that awful fake tan smell following me around, you'd think it was natural. (Does anyone else have real difficulties with the stench of the stuff? Even after I've showered a couple of times, it's still there.)

I've become an expert on the stuff now though. Having worked the orange knees look last summer, I've had to put lots of practice in

I use the spray on leg tanning stuff called Airbrush Legs from Sally Hansen. It's basically really tough makeup, I think. Works pretty well-amazingly opaque over spider veins and bruises (I use my shins as levers).

It doesn't come off, either!
Sounds perfect!!! ;)

I've used Clarins self tan previously and like the way it works, but NOT that smell!

I've recently tried Johnson's Holiday Skin which I really like - but you do have to work at it for a few days before it makes any difference, and even then it's a very light colour. It's basically a body lotion with just a little fake tan mixed in. It does still have a bit of a fake tan smell, but seems much less obvious than the other products (presumably because it's much less concentrated). It's like gold-dust in the shops around here, though, so may be hard to find everywhere because it's new.

If, like me, you're legs are that kind of luminous grey shade when they come out of their winter habitat, almost any other colour is pretty good ;)

Yeah, just make sure you have a good mirror or a friend to get the upper back thighs and backs of knees or the results are, um, pretty funny! It looks like you got shot by a white paint gun on the spots you miss!

Also, put some moisturizer on your knees first or the airbrush color tends to 'grab' more on your knees.

Plus, be careful where you spray it. I had a 'void' in my body shape on the back of the bathroom door where the overspray had hit (I watch too much CSI). My husband thought it was hilarious, but it was a bear to get it off the door!

Thanks everyone - I have to confess I hadn't even thought about getting at hard to reach places!!! Also there was something in our paper today about most fake tans not being good in chlorinated water which is a bit of a bummer as I go swimming every day!! Might just have to go to a salon immediately before my hols!! :sunny:

the salon spray tans are good if you want a quick fix. They fade in chlorine as well though :(

No, I didn't know there was a different shade! In fact, the only time I've found any on a shelf anywhere here, there were only three bottles left so I just picked up two of them - didn't think to look at the labels! Mine are both for 'fair to normal'. Do they do a version for 'luminous to grey' skin? ;)

well i was like you at first and picked up the only 2 bottles that were left(but on get one free)but then like mentioned in other posts they were selling like hot cakes and i made it my mission to get some more bottles  and i found they came in a different shade but to be honest i have gotten fed up with applying it so now i have 2 brand new bottles sitting here
i am on sunbeds now just to get started with my legs because mine are milk bottle white :rotfl:

If you can wait till you get to the States, you'll find an entire section devoted to such products--Walmart. I like Neutrogena. Better to go with the Medium, and get darker through a couple of applications. It doesn't last long, and will have to be reapplied every couple of days. Always wash your hands afterwards, especially your nails, and be careful with the towel you use. It will have to be rinsed out immediately as well. If you end up with streaks, get a loofa sponge, and go at in the bath. It will come off, with a little bit of skin too.

I am also a big fan of the Johnson Holiday skin - if you can find it that is.
My fake tan advice is always make sure you wash your hands properly after and give your nails a good scrub !

When I exfoliate I use either a sponge that has a rough side or some bath gloves I bought from the Body Shop. Either way I then add some shower gel and scrub, Scrub like mad everywhere! It gets rid of all of my dead skin and also the rubbing vigorous rubbing motion on your thighs helps cut down on cellulite. It does leave my skin a tad red for a bit after but it does work, I promise!
