Fake Money

I will never forget being in a McDonalds with another Cub Scout family and they went to pay and one of their bills was counterfeit.

They were taken in back, the police were called and they had to explain themselves - the Mom was pretty upset - it was a 5.00 bill that she had gotten as change from the grocery store nearby.

They were still there by the time we got our food and ate but she told me about it and said she was so scared she was going to be arrested.

My son got a fake $5 bill in change at the state fair, then got turned into the police when he tried to spend it at another stand run my the same food vending company. Police were nice when they called me at home. He wasn't in any trouble as fake money is soooo common at fairs.

DS had just turned 15 and got bday money from grandma. He tried to buy a snack at McDonalds and they called the police because one of the bills was counterfeit. He was terrified. Grandma was mortified. She had no idea where she would have gotten counterfeit money.

Years ago a co-worker got some counterfeit money in change from a fast food drive-thru. He called the police who in turned contacted the FBI who showed up at our office in pretty short order. My co-worker was questioned for a while by the feds. He said they were ok, but they treated the matter very seriously.

On a side note, a the son of a former boss of mine decided he could make a few extra bucks in college by producing fake IDs. Turns out that's a serious offense too, the kid barely dodged some prison time.

This happened to a 6th grader in a school I used to work in. She tried to pay for lunch with a $20 that turned out to be counterfeit. They held her while they called police and her parents. She was bawling her eyes out--I'm pretty sure she had no idea. I don't know what happened. In the population that the school served, it wouldn't have been surprising if the parents were counterfeiting money--there was a lot of illegal stuff going on there.

By federal law this is the procedure. The money has to be confiscated. Had this happen to me once with a fifty dollar bill. Understand this a common bill. I was surprised when they handed it back. I took it to the bank and they made out a report and gave me a copy. I was out 50 dollars.

What I found out at the bank there is a felt tip marker that will turn a certain color when applied to the bill. My wife has one of them now. I don't have one for the simple reason she has all the money.

I would imagine the Feds would be involved quickly. Money schemes are serious business with them. My husband (then he was just my boyfriend) was selling an item on Craigslist years ago. He was sent a "money order" for the item and told to cash it, and then the person would come pick up the item. Well, he had no idea this was (is?) a common scam at the time! He took it to the post office to cash the legit looking check, and they called the Feds. He was scared to death, but said they were pretty nice once they confirmed it was sent to him and he was clueless. Don't know if they ever caught the scammer, but we gave them the packaging they sent it in.

I have received fake money working retail (at Universal actually) and I wasn't taken for questioning, but I know the guest had to answer some questions. No Feds though. But I got a bonus for finding the bill! :)
