So our Firemans Fair starts tonight and I am helping out a friend with the food which got me excited about....zeppoles!!

Deep fried balls of dough, covered with mounds of powdered sugar. YUMMY! Then don't forget you must get into your 'zeppole eating stance', so you don't get powdered sugar all over your self. So, bend over, butt out, and take a bite!

I believe these are a NY/NJ thing, but i'm not positive. In case you don't know what they are, from what I understand they are like beignets (hope I spelled that right!), but denser I believe. I've never had a beignet, so I can't say for sure.

So...what are your favorite fair foods?

Candy apple is my favorite. I also love a well made cotton candy and funnel cake smothered in powdered sugar. Sausage and pepper hero is good too.

Its been years since I have indulged though! If a fair happens to be around I may have to check it out now.:)

Although I love zeppole my local pizza place makes them better than any fair. When we were kids my dad brought a bag home every Friday night! YUM

After posting I see you from LI too! Figures...:)

Oooo I love sausage and pepper heros too! I think i'll be having one of those tonight. East Northport's firemans fair starts tonight through Saturday, if you're not too far, you should stop by! It's free to walk around, they charge for the rides and food. There are great raffles too.

This year at the Fl state fair(Feb for FL), I had deep fried bacon dipped in chocolate... SOOO good..

I did pass on the Krispy Kreme burger though

I have never heard of them before but they sound good. The closest thing we have are mini-donuts. Boy, I am not sure I can pick a favorite-I like caramel apples, cotton candy, mini-donuts, cheese curds and at the state fair they have a french fry stand with the BEST french fries. It's a good thing the fair only comes once/year. :lmao:

I am lucky to live in the County with the 2nd largest county fair in the Country. So my favorite is Pork Burger from the 4h Pork producer booth, then Elephant ears form the Red Barn Booth, Corn from Kwinis(sp), Fried Cookie dough which they did not have this year:sad1:, Candy Apple I have to take a beneadryl to eat so I eat that on the way home, I take the pill as I am walking out & eat the apple in the car.

I've been to that one many times as a kid. Centerport was my favorite one. I am going to see if the family wants to go tonight and since you mentioned East Northport - the best Zeppoles are in Commack the next town over at Emilio's BUT I bet you knew that too!:lmao:

Thanks for telling me!:thumbsup2

No problem! Hope you are able to make it. There is also a parade of a bunch of local fire depts with all the trucks (including the cool antique ones!) tonight that starts around 7 I believe.

And I LOVE Emilios! That place has some of the best pizza and food too.

Zeppoles, eh? We have something that is probably similar, just called "Fried Dough", rather than being a ball of dough they flatten it out somewhat. They are THE BEST FAIR FOOD EVAH!! Slathered in butter and sprinkled liberally with powdered sugar... they are the ONE thing I have at the fair every year, diet or NO diet! :thumbsup2

I also love bloomin' onions :lovestruc

My husband and daughter went to our local small fair one year when she was 5 (she's 14 now). He had a sausage hero with the peppers and onions and all that; when my daughter saw what he had on his plate, she said, "Daddy... that looks like poopies." :rotfl: So, from then until now, and probably until eternity, in our family they are Poopy Sandwiches. :cutie:

I love zeppoles!! Yumm!!!

Let's see, I also love funnel cakes and something we call pizza fritz. Basically it's fried pizza dough covered with powdered sugar.

Our church also does a Polish festival so yummy potato pancakes and pierogies - all homemade and all to die for. The line is usually over an hour long but when you sit down with your Polish Platter of kielbasa, sauerkraut, pierogies, etc. you know it was worth the wait.

Tell me please, what is an elephant ear? Are you allergic to the red dye in the candy apple? Thanks!

Where is the Tag Fairy when you need her? :lmao:

DH and I only go to one or two fairs during the summer so we make the most of it and eat a lot of crap. :) We both love the fresh-cut fries (with skins still on) doused with a generous amount of malt vinegar and salt. I love corn dogs, and cotton candy. He likes those huge polish sausages that are smothered in peppers and onions. And he will sometimes get a smoked turkey leg. And can't forget the elephant ears, either with cinammon sugar, or fruit (canned pie filling like apple or cherry) topping. And we like the deep fried veggies (zucchini, mushrooms, bell peppers, onions rings). And the deep fried Twinkies!!

Oink! Oink!! :)

We have so many festivals around here that it's literally eat your way from one end of the county to the other...and hope you don't go into a permanent food coma by the end of the season!

Let's see, some of my favorites are apple dumplings, apple fritters, funnel cake smothered in blueberries, caramel apples, Italian sausage heroes topped with onions and peppers, apple cider, pumpkin anything!, potato candy and fried clams.

If I never see a candy apple again it will be too soon. I used to work in a bakery/candy shop and last year I was put in charge of the candy apples. I have scars all over my arms from the boiling candy mixture popping out and sealing on my arms. It was AWFUL!

I love corn dogs from the fair!! But after getting food poisoning from a hot dog in Jan, I'm not sure I can eat them ever again....:sad2:

Funnel Cakes, Fried Dough, Elephant Ears....all yum!!

AHH!! The once a year fav for me Deep fried snickers! Oh so bad for you, but oh so good!:yay:

It's funny to hear a sausage and pepper sandwich described with so many words (and of course it has onions). We love zeppoles, too.

Anything on a stick is my favorite!! :lmao: The Iowa State Fair has a ton of food on a stick..

Pickle on a stick
Fried pineapple on a stick
Chicken lips on a stick
Fried twinkies on a stick
Fried hot dog on a stick
Chili dog on a stick
Salad on a stick

... and literally about 50 other things, and they're ALL delicious. One of the new things they have this year is chocolate covered tiramisu on a stick, sounds pretty interesting. Walking tacos are also pretty big at the fair.

Plus, it's not the Iowa State Fair if you don't have at least one maid-rite or tenderloin.

Tell me please, what is an elephant ear? Are you allergic to the red dye in the candy apple? Thanks!

Dough that is fried & it's shaped kinda like an Elephant Ear & the sprinked with Cinnamon & sugar. Some people put fruit on it which is sooo wrong:lmao: or powered sugar leave that for funnel cakes;) And I have become allergic to apples, which stinks cause I love apples.
