First, why is there not a 'hate' button? I am forced to click on "like?"

Second, why is there not an "no cute kitten pics" option, or a "don't share with me" option. I'm new to FB and so is a friend of mine who told me she had unfriended several people because they kept sending her garbage that she had to sift through to get to the interesting posts. I agree! I unfriended somone last week due to her political shares and she was of the same opinion as me but I don't want to spend my 10 minutes a day on FB reading about it.

Last, where is the guide to setting up one's account. I have certain people I only want to see certain things and I do not want friends of my friends posting on my FB page. The last thing I need is some stranger weighing in on my gazpacho soup recipe or anything I post! I can do that here, if I want.

There's more, this is just a long post already.

The problem with a hate button is, it's fine and dandy until people start to hate the stuff YOU post. You are in no way forced to "like" anything.

What is wrong with cute kittens?

If you don't like what people post, unfriend them or hide them from your wall. Simple.

You sound a little crabby, contrary to your signature!

You need to tighten your security settings if strangers can post to your wall/timeline. Go into your privacy settings and set your default privacy to 'friends'. If you want to further restrict which friends see a certain post, click the 'friends' icon at the bottom of your status window and click 'custom'. You can hide that post from whomever you wish. Just remember - that person will stay hidden until you change your settings back.
Also you can hide someone from your newsfeed without defriending them - just click on their name and choose 'unsubscribe from status updates by xxx'. You really have a lot of control over what appears in your news feed - except the new ads, of course - but you can still hide them after they appear.

I think a hate button would just lead to more meanness online. Although I would prefer Agree to Like since someone may post "Cancer Sux" and while I agree, I of course don't like it.

You can prevent certain updates from showing up on your news feed. If you hover over someone's name, you will see a box with a check mark for Friends. If you move the pointer over to that box, a drop down menu will appear. This will show that their posts will show on your feeds. If you select that, you will get a list of items that posts to your feed and you can select/deselect what you do or don't want to see.

For games, you can usually hover the pointer to the right of the message and the option to block the game will appear.

In the settings menu (gear on the top right) there's a privacy option - you can modify and customize who does or does not see your stuff. The thing to keep in mind that your friends' settings plays a role in what people see or don't see. I have been seeing things on my wall from friends of friends that I can read but not like or comment. I have to look into that myself.

Um almost everything you are complaining about can be changed via your privacy settings. Don't want game requests, block them. Someone too political? Hover over the top right corner of their posts and hide them from your news feeds.

These are not Facebook's shortcomings...this is a case of the user not understanding how to customize Facebook.

If one of your friends comments on or 'likes' something with a public setting, that will be on your newsfeed, and you can comment on it or like it yourself. If one of your friends comments on something set to 'friends of friends', you can view it but not comment on it. I wonder how fb decides to show these status updates - my husband and I are friends with some of the same people, and these will appear on my newsfeed but not his, and other times vice versa.

I have no idea what gets posted when - sometimes I'll see something on my phone but not my computer or vice versa. And Facebook's version of privacy changes from day to day. I have to see if I can change the settings I have for each friend so that I don't see what they comment/like.

You said what I was going to say, but you said it much better.

I know I am guilty of playing some of the games...Farmville, Cityville, and a couple others. However, even playing the games myself.. the game stuff, updates posts and stuff are to the point of being ridiculous.

Why doesn't the DIS have a "like" button?!

Nothing wrong with cute kittens now and then. 15 pics of cute kittens in one reading, I'd rather not. Or certain breeds of dog, or random repeating political posts, or game requests when you don't play the games. The good news is, you can block stuff.

And I agree a hate button would cause more problems than needed. If you feel the need to say you don't like something you can post that you don't like it.

::yes::

I have "lists". I have a hide list that has all the people on it that don't play the games. I did that from my friends listing. I also have a family list so if I post something I only want family to see then I post only to my family by using the custom feature when I post. You can block things from your news feeds either individually or all. From your news feed on the upper right hand side by where it says sort there will be a little arrow type icon if you over near the corner. Click on it and it gives you some options. First option is "hide story" which closes only that one. There should be an option somewhere on there to hide all feeds from that person from that particular link. Like it will say "hide all from <name of app>"

The great thing about Facebook? It is free, and if you don't like it no one is going to force you to use it. Think your ideas are better? Create your own. Good luck with that. And it is easy to block or hide garbage. It is also easy to make your page private so only the people you want to see things can. Sounds like your issue is not with Facebook it is with your lack of user knowledge.
