Facebook question

I'm very new to Facebook and had a question about emails I receive from them stating that so&so added me as a friend on Facebook. Then I have to go on and confirm that I know the person & add them. I heard that sometimes ther person isn't actually requesting this but that Facebook automatically does it. Is that true? Most of the emails are from people I know & had already looked up, so Facebook may have gotten the info that way. But one email is about someone I've never heard of. Do strangers add strangers as friends? Why? To get their friend count up?

I think what you are thinking of is "friend suggestions" that appears at the top right corner. Those are people that your other friends are friends with so they thought maybe you know them too.

Yeah, pretty much. I think it's weird, but whatever.

Friend "Requests" come from the person. Friend "Suggestions" come from other friends and from FB. For example, if I requested you to be on my friend list, and you accepted, I might get suggestions to add all your friends and you might get suggestions to add all mine. I have gotten suggestions to add people whom I don't know and have no common friends, I don't know why they showed up and I just ignore them.

What I'm getting are emails from Facebook that read:
"Hi Philagoofy,
Mickey Mouse added you as a friend on Facebook. We need to confirm that you know Mickey in order for you to be friends on Facebook."

Then there's a little box on the right that says:
"To confirm Mickey as a friend Add Friend"

And you click on the "Add Friend" box.

This is before I sign on to Facebook, they are emails I'm getting. I see the "suggestions" you are talking about once I'm on Facebook.
Are these the "requests" that I'm getting - coming from the person but it looks like it's coming from Facebook?
I told one person that I got their request & they said they never sent one.

hmmmm, I don't have emails turned on I have only gotten friend requests on my page. Sorry.

Yes friend resquests come directly from the person who has added you, take it from an admitted facebook addict. Also many times a friend of a friend will add you and if you are questioning how you might know them there is an option to send them a message even before adding them this way you can feel out if they are an acquaintance or a "creeper" lol happy facebooking!!!
