I love Facebook. What I dont get is, how can so many people post on their when they are leaving town??:confused3 I dont get it? Granted its suppose to be friends on your list, but you know other people can read it from other friends facebook(depending on how you have your acct set up?)

I just think its asking for trouble announcing when you are going on vacation.
Am I the only one who thinks that is crazy to post out of town time?

I think most people have it set up private so that no one can access their page unless they are a friend.
I only have people I know personally on my page(except for Pete and Corey from The DIS and I am pretty sure they won't be looking at my page nor coming up to NJ to rob me ;)).
I do post when I am out of town, however we share a 2 family house with my FIL and he is always hanging out here in our house when we're away because he watches our dog for us.
So for me, only friends would know, and added to that, my house is occupied when we are away, so I have no worries.

I have my profile set so that only my friends can see, not friends of friends. So, I don't mind saying when I am traveling. If I had "friends" that I did not know well on my list, or if I had my profile set to anything other than private, I would be reluctant to share something like that.

Even though my profile is private, I never post anything--pictures or updates--on Facebook that I would not want my boss to see. Just in case. ;)

Ya know - I've never thought about it actually & yes you're right - if someone makes a comment to me about me leaving that'as a friend all THEIR friends (who are NOT my friends) can see that comment - even when its set up as private - only friends.

EEK!

I was actually thinking about this the other day. I don't think I am going to post when we leave for vacation - just when we get back.

No I don't think so. You can't see comments your friends make to other people who are NOT your friend, can you? I can only see wall-wall comments between mutual friends. The only stranger comments I see are those made to my friends pages or photos.

So if someone makes a comment to YOU about your trip, only YOUR friends can see that. If you make a comment to a friend about your trip, all of that person's friends can see it.

Sooooo.....don't directly comment to friends about a vacation. Putting it in your status update is fine, only friends can see that.

I also have mine set up so that my bestest friends get to see my status updates, and others like old school mates and aquaintances don't see anything. I love FB!

There was an article about this on I think CNN a couple of days back. A guy who makes his living creating viral videos posted a live-time travel diary on either Facebook or Twitter, I forget which.

When he got home he discovered that his entire studio had been cleaned out. The home wasn't touched, only the professional recording and editing equipment had been taken.

I have mine set to just friends, but I still never put that I'm going out or on vacation. I always say things like "just got back from a BBQ" etc. You just never know, even though it is set to private.

I don't see it as any different than if I mention to someone in real life that I'm leaving on vacation. If they're looking for an opportunity to break into my home while I'm gone, they can find it without visiting my facebook page. I don't have a back entrance for my car, and I don't have Macaulay Culkin to stage parties for me :happytv: so I think after a couple days it would be obvious that we're not home.

In real life I'm sure my neighbor could mention to their friend that we're leaving town, and then their son could overhear and mention it to his buddy who could plan a break-in for while we're gone.. I take precautions on facebook (private profile, only people I actually know, etc) but I won't obsess about it.

It's sad that this would even be a worry today but I guess it does/can happen.

I dont normally say when I'm out of town but will say stuff like "Planning a Disney Trip" or something like that. Then I'll say "had a great time at Disney" when I get back.

I think your true friends probably already know you are going so you can even say something like "mouse bound" and your friends would understand.

I can't wait to post about my Disney trip!!!

Well if they are on the dis also I'm pretty sure they are going to see your ticker ;)

Just because people leave for vacation doesn't mean their home is empty.
