Fabric Covered Memo Boards

I was thinking about making some of the fabric covered memo boards with the criss-crossed ribbons for Christmas presents. Does anyone have a pattern/directions or know where I can find them on line?

Materials:

bulletin board
fabric large enough to cover board
staple gun
ribbon

Steps:

Measure the bulletin board, and add 4" to the width and to the length. Cut the fabric to these dimensions.

Center the front of the board on the wrong side of the fabric. In the center of each side, fold the fabric over to the back of the board, and staple it once. Continue stapling the fabric to the board. Go from the centers to the corners, and add one staple per side at a time, until all but the corners are stapled.

At each corner, stretch the fabric out completely. Pull the corner toward the center of the back of the board, fold the sides over the corner, and staple the material to the board.

Staple the end of a length of ribbon to the back of one corner of the board, then staple the back of the corner diagonally across from it. Repeat on the other two corners with another length of ribbon to make an "X" on the front of the board. Wrap the ribbon diagonally around the board until the front is crisscrossed with ribbon.

Place decorative upholstery tacks at each point where the ribbon crosses on the front.

I would like to also Thank you. My new husband and I have recently rearranged our furniture so I now have a craft area and have bought a plain bulliten board that I was going to use. This sounds even better and I will be modifying the plain one.

ps I'm new and this is my first post. I can see how this can get addictive.

What you can also do, and what I did for a large display for craft shows, etc. is start with a 4'x8' piece of plywood (1/2"-3/4" thickness), cut the top 2' off and cut the remaining 4'x6' piece into three sections lengthwise.

Attach hinges between the pieces to make the sections fold up accordian style (the ones with removable pins make it easier to work on the separate sections and can disassemble for storage since once its padded it won't fold exactly flat). I painted the backs of mine at this point, since it would be exposed.

Then cover the front of each segment with a cut-to-fit piece of quilt batting; low-loft is fine. Because the plywood is a tad rough the batting stays put on its own and, for the short time it will be unattached you don't need to worry about gluing it down.

Next, cut your fabric to the dimensions of your panel plus extra for wrapping around and when you staple it to the back tuck the cut edge under to give it a slightly more finished look. Apply your ribbons as above (and I used the staple gun on these too, rather than mess wtih upholstery tacks in plywood).

Now, if you're board is going to get a lot of use, I highly recommend Scotch Guarding it. Then just put the hinge-pins back in, glue buttons over the staples if you like, and you have a stand-alone french memo board/screen all in one.

Looks nice covered with Christmas cards during the holidays, etc.

I just graduated from NCSU and I spent many hours in Cary...I lived almost in Cary three of the four years...one year on Tryon near Walnut St. and the other at the corner of Western and Hboro (almost anyway). I miss it down there! Make sure to visit the Scrapbook store off Capitol, it's fantastic!

I love Cary. Came to school here from Charlotte and never went back. I'm new to scrapping which store on Capital do you like? I don't go over that way often but I could make an exception.

Take Capital North till you get to Spring Forest Rd. Take a left onto it, then continue until you reach Atlantic Springs Rd. Take a left there and it's in the shopping center on the left. It's called Scrapbook Plaza. They have a lot of neat workshops too. If you go under a bridge on Spring Forest, you went too far. Their website is www.scrapbookplaza.com It's a really nice place and they're super helpful!
