I'm going today to get my MRI results - I'm a little nervous (biting my nails)
I already know there's a problem, because the technician called me yesterday and said, "The Radiologist sees areas of concern and he wants to know if you've had trauma to your knees or surgery to your knees." I told her no - so we'll see what the area of concern is in about 6 hours.

geffric - great picture!!! Is that Eric or Geoff?

RRBB - What is purim service? I'm curious because I enjoy learning about other people's religion.
**I'm so glad that Ian wasn't sick for to long :)
**How are you feeling?

Danauk - Good luck next weekpixiedust: You'll be great!!!!!

Ohanafamily - :wave2:

Well, I gotta run and get Steph up for school
MWF are her early days because she has a reading program she goes to. It's usually a battle each of these days, because she doesn't want to be at school by 7:15am - I can't say I blame her.

Have a good day today!!!

Morning..:wave2:

SLO good luck with the results.. let s know what the outcome it..

Purim is the most festive of Jewish holidays, a time of prizes, noisemakers, costumes and treats. The Festival of Purim commemorates a major victory over oppression and is recounted in the Megillah, the scroll of the story of Esther.

The picture is Eric..

DanaUK :grouphug: pixie dust for you

wonder why the picture won't show up?? I'll check my setting .. be right back..
this is Geoff... gonna be 16 on April 1st...

maybe it is snapfish.. It doesn't seem to work , oh well..

Slo, PD, and good luck. I will have fingers, toes, and eyes crossed for you.

As far as Purim... Ever wondered where the expression "The whole Magilla" came from, (ok, possibly not) It is a story we are comanded to read in it's entirey on Purim. The kiddos (and some adults) dress up and are given noisemakers....They read the story, whenever "Haman" is mentioned they make noise to blot out his name. Haman wore a triangular hat which is the shape of a type of cookie we eat (homantashen). Thereis also a carnival. Sort of a Halloween thing, only attached to a biblical holiday rather than a pagan one

The story itself is quite violent, and translations can be found by Google.

Purim rocks! My best friend (since we were 2-years-old) is Jewish. Purim is the one time I would go to Temple with them. The service wasn't in English so it took a little while to know when I was supposed to use the noicemakers - but it was so much fun.

Slo - I hope all went well today.

Well, there's not much to report from the doctors office today:sad2:

The MRI results show nothing wrong with the right knee, and a possible stress fracture with the left knee. But if there's nothing wrong with the right knee, than why is it making as much noise as the left knee, and have pain?:confused3

My doctor told me to go to an Orthopedic, and he was happy that I already made an appointment. I told him who I was going to, and he was happy because it is also his Orthopedic. :thumbsup2

I told him that my OB suggested that I ask him about me having a connective tissue disorder due to the problem also with my hands. He said that it is a high possibility, and for me to mention this to my Orthopedic, because this would be more his area of expertise. If the doctor suspects this to be the problem, then I will have to take more tests for him to make a diagnosis. :guilty:

Here I thought 2007 was going to bring me better health, but it's not looking to good:sad2: . I will just have to deal with this one step at a time.

Now onto chores - I feel like I'm always doing chores.

Later gaters!!!!

Oh Slo I do hope you poor knees get better.
Maybe a nice pair of Crocs world help.

I wish they could, but Crocs don't fit me :guilty:

Mediums are to small (my toes touch the tip)
Larges are way to big

I need a Medium 1/2 and there's no such thing:sad1:

Not to much going on here - just going to work.

Have a good day today everyone!!!!

**I'm so glad that Ian wasn't sick for to long :)
**How are you feeling?

I'm feeling really good, still. I'm running out of steam quicker these days and have to take naps fairly often. The indigestion comes and goes. But overall I'm doing really well. I officially switched to maternity clothes a couple weeks ago, about a month earlier than with Ian. And I definitely have a baby pooching out in front now. This little one wiggles around so much more than Ian did, and I love it!!!

Okay, you asked for it. ;) First, the Purim service I refered to is going to hear the reading of the Megillah - story of Esther. Here is fairly understandable - though lengthy - explanation of the holiday from Judaism 101. I hope this helps you understand a bit better.

Purim
pvrym.gif
In the twelfth month, which is the month of Adar, on its thirteenth day ... on the day that the enemies of the Jews were expected to prevail over them, it was turned about: the Jews prevailed over their adversaries. - Esther 9:1
And they gained relief on the fourteenth, making it a day of feasting and gladness. - Esther 9:17 [Mordecai instructed them] to observe them as days of feasting and gladness, and sending delicacies to one another, and gifts to the poor. - Esther 9:22
Purim is one of the most joyous and fun holidays on the Jewish calendar. It commemorates a time when the Jewish people living in Persia were saved from extermination.

The story of Purim is told in the Biblical book of Esther. The heroes of the story are Esther, a beautiful young Jewish woman living in Persia, and her cousin Mordecai, who raised her as if she were his daughter. Esther was taken to the house of Ahasuerus, King of Persia, to become part of his harem. King Ahasuerus loved Esther more than his other women and made Esther queen, but the king did not know that Esther was a Jew, because Mordecai told her not to reveal her identity.

The villain of the story is Haman, an arrogant, egotistical advisor to the king. Haman hated Mordecai because Mordecai refused to bow down to Haman, so Haman plotted to destroy the Jewish people. In a speech that is all too familiar to Jews, Haman told the king, "There is a certain people scattered abroad and dispersed among the peoples in all the provinces of your realm. Their laws are different from those of every other people's, and they do not observe the king's laws; therefore it is not befitting the king to tolerate them." Esther 3:8. The king gave the fate of the Jewish people to Haman, to do as he pleased to them. Haman planned to exterminate all of the Jews.

Mordecai persuaded Esther to speak to the king on behalf of the Jewish people. This was a dangerous thing for Esther to do, because anyone who came into the king's presence without being summoned could be put to death, and she had not been summoned. Esther fasted for three days to prepare herself, then went into the king. He welcomed her. Later, she told him of Haman's plot against her people. The Jewish people were saved, and Haman was hanged on the gallows that had been prepared for Mordecai.

The book of Esther is unusual in that it is the only book of the Bible that does not contain the name of G-d. In fact, it includes virtually no reference to G-d. Mordecai makes a vague reference to the fact that the Jews will be saved by someone else, if not by Esther, but that is the closest the book comes to mentioning G-d. Thus, one important message that can be gained from the story is that G-d often works in ways that are not apparent, in ways that appear to be chance, coincidence or ordinary good luck.
Purim is celebrated on the 14th day of Adar, which is usually in March. The 13th of Adar is the day that Haman chose for the extermination of the Jews, and the day that the Jews battled their enemies for their lives. On the day afterwards, the 14th, they celebrated their survival. In cities that were walled in the time of Joshua, Purim is celebrated on the 15th of the month, because the book of Esther says that in Shushan (a walled city), deliverance from the massacre was not complete until the next day. The 15th is referred to as Shushan Purim.

In leap years, when there are two months of Adar, Purim is celebrated in the second month of Adar, so it is always one month before Passover. The 14th day of the first Adar in a leap year is celebrated as a minor holiday called Purim Katan, which means "little Purim." There are no specific observances for Purim Katan; however, a person should celebrate the holiday and should not mourn or fast. Some communities also observe a "Purim Katan" on the anniversary of any day when their community was saved from a catastrophe, destruction, evil or oppression.

The word "Purim" means "lots" and refers to the lottery that Haman used to choose the date for the massacre.

The Purim holiday is preceded by a minor fast, the Fast of Esther, which commemorates Esther's three days of fasting in preparation for her meeting with the king.
grager.gif
The primary commandment related to Purim is to hear the reading of the book of Esther. The book of Esther is commonly known as the Megillah, which means scroll. Although there are five books of Jewish scripture that are properly referred to as megillahs (Esther, Ruth, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs, and Lamentations), this is the one people usually mean when the speak of The Megillah. It is customary to boo, hiss, stamp feet and rattle gragers (noisemakers; see illustration) whenever the name of Haman is mentioned in the service. The purpose of this custom is to "blot out the name of Haman."

We are also commanded to eat, drink and be merry. According to the Talmud, a person is required to drink until he cannot tell the difference between "cursed be Haman" and "blessed be Mordecai," though opinions differ as to exactly how drunk that is. A person certainly should not become so drunk that he might violate other commandments or get seriously ill. In addition, recovering alcoholics or others who might suffer serious harm from alcohol are exempt from this obligation.

haman.gif
In addition, we are commanded to send out gifts of food or drink, and to make gifts to charity. The sending of gifts of food and drink is referred to as shalach manos (lit. sending out portions). Among Ashkenazic Jews, a common treat at this time of year is hamentaschen (lit. Haman's pockets). These triangular fruit-filled cookies are supposed to represent Haman's three-cornered hat. My recipe is included below.

It is customary to hold carnival-like celebrations on Purim, to perform plays and parodies, and to hold beauty contests. I have heard that the usual prohibitions against cross-dressing are lifted during this holiday, but I am not certain about that. Americans sometimes refer to Purim as the Jewish Mardi Gras.

Purim is not subject to the sabbath-like restrictions on work that some other holidays are; however, some sources indicate that we should not go about our ordinary business on Purim out of respect for the holiday.

Recipe for Hamentaschen
 • 2/3 cup butter or margarine
 • 1/2 cup sugar
 • 1 egg
 • 1/4 cup orange juice (the smooth kind, not the pulpy)
 • 1 cup white flour
 • 1 cup wheat flour (DO NOT substitute white flour! The wheat flour is necessary to achieve the right texture!)
 • 2 tsp. baking powder
 • Various preserves, fruit butters and/or pie fillings.
Blend butter and sugar thoroughly. Add the egg and blend thoroughly. Add OJ and blend thoroughly. Add flour, 1/2 cup at a time, alternating white and wheat, blending thoroughly between each. Add the baking powder with the last half cup of flour. Refrigerate batter overnight or at least a few hours. Roll as thin as you can without getting holes in the batter (roll it between two sheets of wax paper lightly dusted with flour for best results). Cut out 3 or 4 inch circles.

Put a dollop of filling in the middle of each circle. Fold up the sides to make a triangle, folding the last corner under the starting point, so that each side has corner that folds over and a corner that folds under (see picture at right). Folding in this "pinwheel" style will reduce the likelihood that the last side will fall open while cooking, spilling out the filling. It also tends to make a better triangle shape.
hamenfold.gif

Bake at 350 degrees for about 15-20 minutes, until golden brown but before the filling boils over!

Traditional fillings are poppy seed and prune, but apricot is my favorite. Apple butter, pineapple preserves, and cherry pie filling all work quite well. I usually use Pathmark grocery store brand fruit preserves, and of course the traditional Simon Fischer brand prune lekvar. I have also made some with Nutella (chocolate-hazelnut spread); I find it a bit dry that way, but some people like it.

The number of cookies this recipe makes depends on the size of your cutting tool and the thickness you roll. I use a 4-1/4 inch cutting tool and roll to a medium thickness, and I get 20-24 cookies out of this recipe.

List of Dates
Purim will occur on the following days of the Gregorian calendar:
 • Jewish Year 5766 : sunset March 13, 2006 - nightfall March 14, 2006
 • Jewish Year 5767 : sunset March 3, 2007 - nightfall March 4, 2007
 • Jewish Year 5768 : sunset March 20, 2008 - nightfall March 21, 2008
 • Jewish Year 5769 : sunset March 9, 2009 - nightfall March 10, 2009
 • Jewish Year 5770 : sunset February 27, 2010 - nightfall February 28, 2010
Something I always told my friends, we Jews have some great holidays. Sure, we have to fast on Yom Kippur for 26+ hours to repent any sins we may commit in the coming year. But our other holidays make up for it. On Purim we're supposed to drink until we curse the good guy and praise the bad guy. On Passover we're required to drink at least 4 glasses of wine at the Sedar. Yup, we know how to have a good time. ;)

YES! I've wondered that! So, how does the expression come from that story? Do tell.
Here I go again, another quote to give an answer ;) ...

THE WHOLE MEGILLAH
[Q] From Joe Hannabach: “I wonder what the origin of the phrase the whole magilla might be. It’s used in the same sense as the whole nine yards. There used to be a cartoon character on American TV called Magilla Gorilla, I think.”

[A] Shush! Don’t throw suggestions around carelessly like that. You’ll start an urban legend and then we’ll never get the word’s history straight ever again. The name of Magilla Gorilla is not the origin of the expression; the situation is probably the other way about, in that the expression may have been an inspiration for Mr Gorilla’s first name.

It’s really spelled megillah, and it’s the Hebrew word for a scroll. In particular, it refers to one of five books of the Old Testament, namely Song of Songs, Ruth, Lamentations, Ecclesiastes, and Esther, which are read on certain Jewish special days. The most common reference, though, is to the Book of Esther, which is read in its entirety at the feast of Purim.

Though the feast day is a joyous one, the story wanders at great length through vast amounts of detail and it can be a bit of a trial to sit through it all. So it isn’t surprising that the whole Megillah (in the Yiddish from which American English borrowed it, gantse Megillah) came to be a wry term for an overly extended explanation or story, or for something tediously complicated, or an involved situation or state of affairs.

The English translation of the Yiddish phrase started to be heard and written about the middle of the 1950s, principally by American television performers, night-club hosts and others in the entertainment business, mostly in the big cities such as New York. Frank Sinatra sang it in Come Blow Your Horn in 1963: “The taller the tree is — the sweeter the peach / I’ll give you the whole magilla — in a one word speech — reach”. The lyric is saying that he will condense a long and boring explanation into a single word. However, at this period, the full phrase the whole megillah was still comparatively rare. A more typical usage was in the Post Standard of Syracuse, New York, in December 1965: “Silly, those people who make a megillah out of acting. Just learn the lines; the rest is up to the director.”

It was only in the early 1970s that the meaning you mention started to appear: “the whole thing, all that might be expected”. The first recorded use in this sense is in Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In in 1971.
