I’m sure it looks good on your college application if you participated in the same activities all four years of high school (basketball team, class president, etc). But what if you have different activities for each year – do you think that looks really bad?

I don't think so - but I'm not on anyones admission board ;)

DD is a junior, and from what we've read and been told, the more selective colleges do like to see evidence of a "commitment" to an activity.
But I don't think it necessarily means that different activities each year is viewed as "bad". I mean - if someone tried different sports activities each year for the sake of participating (not being a standout in any particular area but wanting to try different things for the experience and physical activity) - that would certainly look better than someone who did nothing. Or someone who joined a language club one year and then student government next year instead. Again, I think that would look better than that person not participating in anything extracurricular. Just my 2 cents!! :)
