Extra Night at Discount?

Hi - we will be staying at AKL through a Friday night (checkout Sat AM). We planned on driving home on Sunday.

Of course, we would prefer to just go ahead and stay Sat night at AKL, but we figured that, since we would be doing little on Sunday besides getting up and getting straight on the road, we would save a little and just spend Saturday night in one of the cheaper off-site hotels.

However, I have heard from some friends that, occasionally, WDW will leave a message on your phone on your checkout day offering to give you a disocunted rate if you stay an extra night (i.e., don't check out that day). Does this happen with enough frequency that we should risk it (we'd stay that extra night with even a minimal discount) or is it so rare we should go ahead and book offsite for Sat, night?

FYI, we will be going at a slow period - the Saturday night in question is next Saturday Feb 1.

On a related note, if we decided on Sat, Morning that, with or without a discount, we'd like to extend our stay at AKL, what are the chances we'll be able to, again given the Feb. 1 date?
Thanks,
Mike

I reserved a room at the GF using a fall fling code (or one of those codes that expired two months before my check-in date) at a pretty good rate. When we arrived, we asked about the possibility of staying an extra night at the same rate. The concierge CM phoned up and checked for us and was told that this was no problem. When she tried to get us a room however, there was no availability that night (there was a conference and it was a Saturday night).

This suggests that it is possible to get the discounted rate on-site. The other thing I thought of was the 'come-back' rate or whatever it's called (where you get a discount if you book a return visit). Who's to say the following night doesn't count as a return visit KWIM?

On the availability issue, why not check the availability on-line now, and before you go?

I can't speak personally for the AKL, but when I stayed at the WL they did call me. They called 2 days before my check out and gave me the room at half rate if I wanted to stay (I did). They also called a day before my new check out date with the same deal but I had to leave and get back to reality

I really wouldn't count on it. We were there the first week of Dec. which was supposed to be a "slow" time. Not only did we not receive a phone call, when I tried to extend out stay at the Polynesian one night so we wouldn't have to drive home in bad weather we were told there were no rooms available. The 1st CM I spoke to was quite short with me so I approached another CM who confirmed there were no rooms but would put us on a waiting list if we agreed to pay rack rates (I had an AP discount)!
They didn't even try to help us find other accomodations on site or suggest how we could do so.

I really was disappointed in the quality of service at a "deluxe".
