Extra magic hours or not...

The past 2 years we have used the extra magic hour days. I've also read that those days are typically more crowded for those particular parks. So I was thinking this year to not do the magic hour. What do u think? Does this sound like a good plan? :confused3

Anyone find this to be true?

Our trip is Dec. 2 - 9

Wooo Whooooo!!

Hey oogie - we'll be there from the 1st-9th. This is our first trip where I'm considering the EMH's. We've never needed them when we traveled before, so I'm curious about what other posters think.

Enjoy your trip!

I've finished making my personal plans for my upcoming solo trip, as you can see below. When picking a park for each day I made sure to avoid EMH days (both morning and evening), because of the posts on here, and my own limited experiences. On three different visits to WDW I spent a day at Epcot when they had evening EMH hours scheduled, once in March, and the other two in December.

On all three occasions the park was jammed with wall-to-wall people, and it was difficult to enjoy any attraction. And the park was crowded all day long. So, personally, I have made plans that avoid being in any park on EMH days.

I hope it results in somewhat less crowded parks.

Enjoy.

When we were there this past April, Easter week, we made good use of the morning EMH at both the MK and Epcot. At the MK we were there a few minutes before opening at 7am and the park was empty. We have some wonderful pictures where it really looks like the park was open just for us. No one else around. We were able to do almost the entire park by 11. It did get crowded by then and we left and went somewhere else. Epcot was not quite so empty, probably because it did not open quite so early so the later sleepers were able to make it. But still we got to so on Soarin twice, Test Track and Mission Space in the first hour. Again it got crowded and we left for another park. The morning EMH at the AK was a complete mess. They made no attempt to check for resort guests, so everyone was allowed in, but they only had a few turnstyles open. A mess. So, unless they have improved that, I would not recommend it. Because we were getting early starts most days, we did not do the night EMH, except one. The MK was open until 3am and we went there once at 2am. It was quite manageble. So, I like the morning emh at some parks.

I always go to AM EMH (virtually every day of the trip that we did not do a PM EMH late the night before)... never ONCE regretted an AM EMH... they are amazingly empty and easy to ride the open attractions.
If that park THEN starts to fill 2 to 3 hours later... its not a problem.
Were happy with "doing" that park for the day and we can HOP elsewhere or do lunch and take a rest until later.

PM EMH's are a mixed bag. I've been when they were PACKED... but on other nights (sometimes within the same trip), the crowds were basically so low that it was like "free rides" on all the open attractions.

Those who have attended PM EMH's and say that "they are TOO CROWDED" are right... but the accuracy of the statement can ONLY be applied for the nights they may have attended.
I can say, from personal experience, that they CAN be EMPTY, or FULL or somewhere IN-BETWEEN for attendance, often within the same week.

It can change so much (either way), that saying it was "like X" on a given night, can be meaningless on another night in the same time-period. So, you simply don't KNOW unless you go. Its similar to saying that you attended on a given night and it rained, so guests should never go on that night because it will probably be rainy.

And, considering EMH's are FREE to attend... if its busy, just people-watch or hit the exit (where ELSE are ya gonna go at 10pm, anyway?)
But if its not busy... you're ALL SET for EXTRA FUN!

We find Robo comments true for us as well. If you can get to the park at the start of the EMH in the morning, you will get more done before 10-11 a.m. than the rest of the day. When it starts filling up, we park hop on out to another park. The eve hours are a little harder to predict. MK always seems crowded to us, sometimes the parks are empty, and sometimes not.

I will take a different approach.

Don't worry about the crouds. You can't avoid them, sans going a different time of year.

If it's crowded, stop and smell the roses. You are going to all get fast passes anyway right? So if it's crowded, you may have to come back to ride Splash Mountain at 4:00pm instead of 3:30pm. That gives you an extra 30 minutes to stop and visit Tom Sawyer island, or go to the shooting gallery.

EMH do not effect the parks enough to make you avoid 1 park over an another.

Stop pbsessing over crowds and just enjoy everything. Disney is so so so much more than how many rides can you get on in a day.

If you are early risers, then go to the early EMH's. We always feel they are worth it. When it starts to get crowded, we hop to the park that had the EMH's the day before. Luckily, this has worked for us.

We were there last week.

Against DIS policy (lol), we went to an EMH morning at MK, and an EMH evening at Epcot.

For the morning EMH at MK it "felt" crowded by 8:30am. However, we were able to ride alot of rides with hardly any waits. Around 10am, we hopped right on Splash (twice), but by early afternoon, we had to get out of there. Not only was the heat starting to soar, but the crowds were getting thick. We headed to POTC and it had a 45 minute stand-by. We left to go swimming. This was for Thursday morning.

For the evening EMH at Epcot, it didn't "feel" crowded, but the lines for the rides were long (with no FP left). 40 minutes for Test Track, and 30 minutes for Soarin'.

I agree with u Robo, the AM EMH are pretty awesome. I Love just walking around and hardly seeing anyone around. I think we will have 2 play it by ear for the PM EMH.
Got quattro, I guess I'm just trying to weed everything out for the rest of my family (Mom, Dad, Sis) since it's their first trip. But them being there is part of the stop and smell the roses.
AJKMOM, that's a great idea bout the thr previous days EMH. I think I will give it a try. Great comments from everyone! Very helpful!

If doing EMH at Epcot just be careful. It is very dark, the walkways don't have much lighting on them.

While Robo is my Guru I know he isn't trying to get 3 kids up and at a park for 8a.m. when they are on vacation. Crowds have nothing to do with me and EMH mornings it's sleepyheads!!On the same note they will never make EMH evenings so no point for us. So I'm avoiding them and hoping the park I choose is less crowded becuz everyones at EMH!!

I like getting to a less crowded park about mid morning, and don't like to stay to all hours of the night. I steer clear of the crowd magnet, EMH. Works for me.

I still don't get why the a.m. emh park gets so much more crowded as the day goes on. If it were crowded during the early hour, I'd understand it. There are so many resort guests, I could see them getting up early to take advantage of it, as we have done. But our experience is the same as others': empty the first couple of hours, then packed the rest of the day. Why do so many more people get there late? It's in several guidebooks that the emh park is more crowded, so if you can't take advantage (ie. you stay off site or know you will sleep late), it would make sense to plan to avoid that park. Even if you think you will get there early, if you end up oversleeping, wouldn't you change your plans at the last minute, and do that park another day? Assuming it's not your last day.

It just seems logical to me that considering the amount of people who avoid early entry as well as the small number of guests who are early enough to actually benefit from it, that park's attendance would be, at most, average.
I'm probably overthinking this, but I've wondered this often.

As usual, Robo has outlined things very well. We have had the same experience with EMH's. Basically, if you get to the early ones early, you're all good. The late ones are a mixed bag. Just be flexible! :thumbsup2

I'm really confused about this too. All the guides I've read, the DIS, and now TGM all say to avoid ALL the EMH. Now I dont like crowds but we're spending a lot of $$ staying on site (even at ASMO, which is nothing but a motel, really, the rates are something like $139 a night!). What's the use then ?
And usually, the parks that do not have EMH close really early, like 8 or 9pm which doesnt give you much time at all.

You've got to remember the goal of those giving the advice : in the case of the sources you cite, the goal is generally to see as many attractions as possible with as little wait. That's a great goal, but it doesn't always apply to 100% of the vacation.

My personal EMH advice is a bit more balanced :

AM EMH's are great *IF* you get there early (before EMH begins), and *IF* you park hop or take a resort break as the day goes on. This is because of the odd but understandable fact that whatever park has EMH morning gets more crowded as the day goes on than it would on a non-EMH morning.

That seems counter-intuitive (I think someone asked this earlier in the thread), but it does make sense. What happens is (as many of us can attest) that people have the best intentions of getting the gang up early for AM EMH, but when they all actually try to get up and do it they just don't make it. This is why the largest crowds form at the entrance on EMH days around 10AM-11AM, when the EMH benefit is long over; people mark that day as their "MK DAY" or their "MGM DAY", and when they don't get up in time they still go because that was their designated day to be there. The best intentions bite them in the behind.

If you really get to an EMH (especially at the MK) early (like, at the turnstyles before they turn them on), you can do almost all the major attractions by lunch, while most people are just wandering into their first or second land. By major attractions, I'm talking : Pirates, Splash, BTM, Haunted Mansion, the Fantasyland dark rides, Space Mountain, and Buzz. It's incredibly easy to hit all of those between 8AM and noon or 1PM if you book it. Then you can relax while everyone else is trying to wait in the worst crowds of the day.

PM EMH is a "mixed bag", as others have said, in terms of ride lines, I'll agree. If that's your sole goal, it may not be the experience you expect. It's pretty unpredicatable, at least early in the evening. I find that especially when you go in the slower periods the parks close achingly early, so I just enjoy being in the park that late. And usually, by the last hour, many people have begun to leave and you can ride super-headliner attractions with little or not wait, repetitively. In the last hour of EMH before I've done things like ride Splash Mountain 5 times in a row, or 6 or 7 trips on RnR.

If you "work" EMH's, you really can use them to your advantage. Crowd levels can be decieving : there can be lots of people around, but that just means there are rides elsewhere in the park where people aren't that are just waiting to be ridden. That's the big advantage of the EMH, both AM and PM, really. The trick is to be where others aren't.

For AM EMH's, that means by the time everyone else is walking in at 9, 10, or 11AM, you are at the opposite end of the park. So even once they start riding in Fantasyland or Tomorrowland, you're already in Frontieerland and Liberty Square, where it remains slower until the new arrivals work their way around.

For PM EMH's, that means hanging out in the back of the parks as it gets later. Splash Mountain is a great example of that - not many people are in that area once 11PM or so hits. You can run back and forth between Splash and BTM on many slower nights at this time while everyone else is heading to the front of the park. At MGM PM EMH, Star Tours is often crazilly crowded when EMH begins because people are deep in the park and it's one of the closest EMH-open attractions. By the end of the night, you can often visit it (and Muppets, when it's open) practically by yourself. Remember : you don't have to be at the exit when they close. You can be at the absolute opposite end of the park (i.e., American Adventure at Epcot) when they close, and take your sweet time getting out. If you are staying on-site, it will give the busses time to clear out to boot.

Like most things, it really depends on how you want to spend your time...I think Robo put it best, though : it's 10PM, where else do you have to be? I'd rather be at least walking around a park, enjoying the atmosphere, even if I'm not doing tons of rides. I don't go to Pleasure Island or any of that, so it's either whatever park is open or the resort room watching TV. I know which one I pick, every time! ;)

NED, yours is the best post I've read all day ! THANK YOU ! :lovestruc

i AGREE it's what works for you and we would be the ones arriving an hour afer EMH for sure so why bother! They still work for us We go to another park in the a.m.

A good plan is to go to a park that had EMH the night before. The thought is that everyone went last night so this morning will not be crowded. A side benefit is you get to sleep an hour longer!
Usually the best bet is to think of what the masses will do and then do the opposite!
