I have a window that I need a scarf for. It needs to be 8' long by 6' wide, so allowing for a minimal drape in the center, it's 23' in length. Other than ordering custom, does anyone have any ideas where to look? I got a quote for a simple custom scarf and it was over $1500!!

Any thoughts?

I get a catalog called "Domestications" that has a lot of curtains, drapes etc. I get another catalog called "A Touch Of Class" that has a lot of that type of stuff too. Did you try Country Curtains??? They have catalog, online, & stores...I think the stores may only be in the New England area, although I am not 100% sure about that. But anything they offer in the stores they also offer online & via catalog.

The Company Store is another catalog/online thing that sells a lot of curtains etc.

Did yout try an Internet search of curtains/drapes????

$1500... yikes.

I have a window about that large, and I couldn't find anything ANYWHERE that was long enough. Finally, I took two of these 216" scarves and combined them, offset a bit so one hits the floor on each side... a little hard to explain, but it worked well for my window:

I made an extra long scarf from material I bought at a fabrics store for the three very long windows in my bedroom. It took me a long time to find what I wanted but I bought more than enough. It has been about 6 years but I am very happy with the result.

I have a scarf for my sliding glass door. I wasn't going to pay the prices anyone wanted, so I just made my own. It's not too hard, just hem the sides. If you can't do it, I wouldn't think a local seamstress would charge too much for it.

I used a velvet/velour type material, so no straggly ends to worry about, so I didn't even hem most of it and it still looks good.

That will be my choice if I can't find anything else. I've done this before and it works, but it's not really what I wanted for this window.

I found a sheer voile 8 yd. scarf at this site:

Swags-Galore

Thanks Denise-- I found it, but it only comes in white and I really need some shade of tan.

Maybe make it yourself, combine two or check ebay...

Making it myself is out of teh question. I can barely sew a button on, and DH has forbidden me to touch his sewing machine. And while he's good at making rough repairs, like patching jeans and such, hemming a delicate fabric is not something he can do either.

So I'm pretty much going to end up with the two scarf thing. I am going to get the custom scarf for the LR window, as the fabric is just gorgeous and matches the color scheme in the LR perfectly (it's hard to match), but I can't do both the LR and DR windows custom, simply too much money.

Sorry, Anne, assumed it was available in all colors.

Here's another sheer 288" in beige & tan: Brylane Home

It appears they have quite a selection of scarves in 8 yd. lengths - even beaded & leopard print versions, LOL

Denise < --- might have to get the leopard print to match my bengal cat ;)

No problem Denise! Pretty kitty btw!

My Front window is two windows side by side and I have a scarf from JC Penney on the top. I am not sure of the length but I have very long windows, 72 inches from top to bottom and its a nice length on the sides with it swagged in the middle on top, you can always buy one and try it if you don't like it take it back.

Dye it, or if it's sheer, tea stain it.

Unfortunately my windows are much longer than that--96 inches from the upper mullion I'm starting at (where the blinds hang) to the bottom. If I wanted to go all the way from the top it would be about 114 inches top to bottom!

A standard scarf from Penney's looks ridiculous. I already tried :( They do'nt carry the long ones.

Um, I'm not that handy. Not even going to tell the story of the last time I tried to dye something, I'd get laughed off the DIS.

Are you planning on allowing the scarf to rest on the floor? What I did for our large window was purchase 7 or 8 yards of guazy type fabric from Jo-Anns for about $60. I got a beautiful rod with finials and draped the fabric over the rod and let the remaining fabric gather on the floor. I didn't sew a stitch, but rather manipulated fabric so the edges didn't show.

No, I"d like it to end an inch or two below the window. My son is teh vacuumer in the hosue, and well...you know what will happen if it pools on the floor...

Try checking at a fabric store to see if there any seamstresses there that would make one for you.

I found one at Brylane.com that will work nicely, and is only $15!
