any one know which car rental co. does not charge for spouse to also drive? thanks.............

Not sure but if you happen to have USAA, spouses are free for extra driver.

I checked out the FAQ on several rental car web sites. Most of them had clearly defined policies on extra drivers. Here's a summary:

Alamo doesn't charge for spouse if you're a member of their Alamo Insiders program, which is free to join.

Spouse is free with Budget.

Spouse is free with Avis.

Hertz is free only if booked with an AAA or AARP rate, and both drivers are members of that club.

Dollar charges for spouses.

Spouce is free with National if primary renter is a member of their Emerald Club, which is free to join.

Thrifty web site says they charge for spouses "at most locations." Don't know specifically about Orlando.

Enterprise charges for spouses.

Interesting note if you're going to Disneyland instead of Disney World. California apparently has a law against the extra driver fee. Most sites made mention of this.

bolding is mine...
Interesting!!!!
We rent from Enterprise every time and our paperwork shows no charge for spouses and I have asked and have always been told there is no add'l charge for a spouse. and they have both driver's license #'s on the papers.... :confused3

If you rent from National and are a member of the Emerald Club, you can have another authorized family member (same household) or co-worker eligible to drive the car for free. You don't 'register' them as an extra driver - otherwise it will charge. Read thru the specs for the Emerald Club. As long as you book mid-size you can also pick any car from the Emerald Aisle.

When we booked using BJ's coupons, most of the companies on the BJ's site included free second drive. Worth looking into, if that's an option; perhaps Sam's club offers that also.

There are several codes on mousesavers, some with Alamo and National will give you a second driver. I think the car and driver magazine code for National does.

Like a pp said.... I also joined Emerald Club at National, gives you the second driver and you can rent from the Emerald Isle. I paid for a mid and was able to get a rav4.

I book through Costco then add discounts I find here or on mousesavers. One of the costco perks is that you get an additional driver free with alamo, national, and i think Avis.

We usually use Alamo bc they always have the best coupon codes out. I got a 5-day rental in vegas for $66 and additional driver free.

I think the Enterprise info. is incorrect. We rented from Enterprise in San Francisco in November and locally in December after a wreck and did NOT have a spouse charge either time.
