If I were to buy a 4 day park hopper pass, could I decide to upgrade it to a 5 day pass after I had used some, but not all 4, of the days? Would it just be the $15 more that it would be if I had bought a 5 day pass ahead of time or would it cost more to do this?

Once you've bought the pass, you're locked into the days specified.
Now you can return or cancel in some cases and upgrade to the 5.

DLR doesn't do price bridging as a rule, so you would pay he difference between what you paid for the 4 day ticket and the gate price of a 5 day. There have been reports of people getting more than they paid towards upgrade value on some 3rd party tickets, but it's pixies dust and not something you can count on consistently. Most tickets can be upgraded, but you'd have to check the terms of your specific tickets. For example, days cannot be added to military salute tickets.

As of about 2 years ago, the prices at the gate became the same as the prices on the Disneyland website. If you were to buy the pass on the DL website or at the WDTC store, or in person at the ticket booth, and you want to add a day, you can go to the ticket booth before the end of the 4th day of use, and pay the $15. If you buy from another site such as Ares or getawaytoday.com, you will pay the difference between what you paid and $315. Some tickets, such as comp tickets or military tickets are not upgradable. Also, the fuse will not change. If you bought a 4 day park hopper, they normally have a 13 day fuse (must be used within 13 days of first use), so if you use the 4th day on the 13th day after the first use, you won't be able to upgrade.

getawaytoday.com actually has buy 4 days get the 5th free so that I would think would be a good option! For 5 day PH for 2 adults and 2 kids is like 1170 with that deal

Thanks everyone. I'm tempted to buy the tickets from Disney because I have gift certificates but I like the idea of extra savings from the other sites.
