Is it important to buy the extra rental insurance coverage? What about tolls? Renting from Thrifty

Most people find their personal auto policy, combined with credit card coverage is sufficient.

Personal auto policy coverage for rental cars vary by state and sometimes by policy. You need to check with your broker or read your policy.

I don't ever buy the extra insurance. I have rental car coverage on my personal auto policy and primary rental car coverage on my Chase Credit Card. You have to look into your own policy if you have one or the policies of whatever credit card you are going to use. Usually it doesn't make sense to buy it, sometimes it does.

Tolls, IIRC Thrifty has a little box they mount on the windshield with a switch on it, if that switch is off then their toll transponder won't work. You can either get a Visitor Toll Pass while at the airport, pay cash or bring your own EZ Pass compatible transponder and use that to save what can be a substantial amount. In 2017 I paid cash for my tolls, and still got charged $20 because my passenger messed with the transponder and flipped the switch to on.

You can order a SunPass mini for $5 and load a credit card to fund it or buy one locally. I'll leave our EZ Pass transponders at home.

I increased our personal auto insurance recently and it was surprisingly inexpensive with much higher coverage. I decline rental coverage.

CC's are changing policies on car rental insurance so be sure to check right before you leave for your trip.

DVC Travel Insurance is $99 for a year and has lots of additional coverage including auto rental.

Call your car insurance company and ask if you have rental insurance included in your policy. If you don't you may want the extra. If you do, then you can feel safe in knowing you're covered. Usually, should something happen, your insurance co. will want you to call them first and not the car rental company.

I work for the “like a good neighbor” company. We have an endorsement called UNOC(loss of use) that you can add to your policy. In my state it runs around 35 every six months. We add it on for our policyholders when they pick up the car and remove it when they return it so the cost is pro rated. I just leave it on my own personal policy. I can’t speak for other insurance companies but this is what my company offers. As stated before some credit card companies offer it as well. Have a nice trip.

I would check with your insurance company and/or credit card company to see if this is covered. Coverage may vary with each insurance company. Those off-brand rental companies try to twist your arm to pay for extras you really don't need.

I’m renting at MIA though. This say to pick up at Orlando
That's information you didn't put in your OP. Since this is a message board primarily dealing with DisneyWorld, unless specified otherwise you're going to to get advice relating to DisneyWorld. If you have an EZ-Pass I would bring it and use it, otherwise it gets into a how much are you willing to pay to save time and hassle kind of thing. How much do you plan on using Toll roads? Are you willing to spend money and get a local transponder?
