Explain pin trading

So many scrapers out there. It's taken a lot of fun of trading for me.

I'd suggest waiting until your kids are older to trade. I know my girls at that age wouldn't have wanted to get rid of the pins they had, even if they were getting one back in return.

My kids were 16 and 12 on our first cruise last August--we've been collecting pins from Disney world for years, and had duplicates (from mystery sets) and ones they don't like--so we brought those and the girls went to Officer Pin Trading on the 1 night they had that--they enjoyed it! I think they traded 2 pins each. It is the first time we've ever traded--I know there are lots of opportunities at Disney World...but like I said, they 'liked' their own pins too much or else we were too busy doing stuff to slow down and pin trade.

It is best to buy one of the cheaper sets and use those to trade. Cast members aren't supposed to refuse a trade.

I've never collected pins but I belong to the Disney Movie Club and they're always offering 'special' pins with each order. Is it worth starting to accumulate those before our cruise? Are they actually uncommon designs that people would be excited to trade for?

Some of the DMC pins are really unique and you can trade any pin with a Disney trademark. Sometimes they offer free pins with an order, so that is a great deal.

How do you tell if a pin is a scraper?
A lot of the bags of pins you might buy online are either fakes or scrappers, which are pins that were made for Disney but were "scrapped" b/c they did not meet the quality control criteria. If you do a quick google search of "Disney scrapper pins" you'll find probably more information than you ever wanted to know about them.

I've found that a lot of the pins on the display boards at the parks tend to end up with scrappers from people who buy the bulk bags trading on them. But it sounds like the officer pin trading might yield some better pins than what I've seen in the parks.

I don't pin trade really. I just collect. The coolest pins are also the most expensive pins. If I like it enough to buy it, I like it enough to not trade it.
I've collected pins for years but have never really gotten into the trading thing b/c I agree with Westcoastwild, if I like it enough to buy it, I like it enough not to trade it. I've gotten more into buying pins that really mean something to me about a certain trip or are Limited Edition. For example, the only souvenir I bought from my Alaska cruise was the LE pin for that year.

My girls, ages 9 and 11, love pin trading with CMs. We use these locking backs:

I don't want them to have scrapers so I buy the mystery bags so if they get duplicates, they trade those. http://www.ebay.com/itm/252478314277?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT

We have seen fakes on the Cm boards but my girls are old enough to avoid them now. And if you get something you don't end up liking, trade it again!

My girls got chosen to be honorary CM on officers pin trading night. It was so fun! They got a CM black lanyard loaded with pins, and they traded with kids and adults as if they were a CM. Of course they had to give their CM lanyards back at the end of the event, but they had a lot of fun!

If you buy a large lot of pins from Ebay and the cost per pin is under $2, many, if not all, will be fakes.
But if you were trading with someone, there's no special way to tell a fake from a real one, unless you are an 'expert'?

Scrappers can have a variety of issues - poor paint jobs, misspelled words, incomplete Mickeys in hidden Mickey series pins, they often feel rough because the edges are not as finished as they should be.

SO, when you buy the mystery bag on eBay, you feel fairly certain that they are "legit". ? Im thinking of surprising my daughters with this on our upcoming cruise...but I want to know what Im getting into.
