Hi all. I just finished my very 1st scrapbook on our Disney vacation. I used the 12/12 creative memories photo album because it came in my beg. kit. BUT what albums work ok without paying the high price of the CM albums.

Any and all suggestions would be great. Or is CM albums really the best?? Thanks for all the help.

Not only are their albums beautiful- they have a lifetime guatantee- which I actually had to use once. A starp broke and they sent me a new album!

I want to preface this by saying that I am a CM Consultant. I don't want to appear subversive here.

Post-Bound, I cannot speak for, other than I personally do not like them. I have a good reason, really, other than I am a CMC. I don't like the opening at the top where stuff like dust, water (3 year old with a spray bottle attacked my albums the other day), etc... can get in and potentially ruin the pictures. However, if you want other opinions on this, you should talk to others.

As far as Strap Hinge albums go, I do know a little bit. Before I became a consultant (about 7 months ago) I went out to the local craft / scrapbooking stores and priced supplies as a comparison... so I can justify not only to my customers that CM is competitive, but to myself as well. The strap hinge albums that are most frequently compared to CM albums are the Westrim. I have heard many many people say they are the same. I will tell you point blank they are NOT! I bought one before I became a consultant, and took it out. It looked odd, so I took it to my husband along with a CM album and asked him to look at the two. After looking at them, he said that the pages felt different, looked different, and that the other one (CM) was better. Above mentioned three year old is using it as her scrapbook. I have noticed that those pages are a slightly different color now than the edging as well.

Regarding price, the strap hinge albums I priced WERE cheaper. However, they only had 11 pages compared to CM's 15. So, to get to 30 pages in an album (60 front and back), you have to buy one set of refills and two sets of page protectors. For Westrim, you have to buy 2 sets of refills and 3 sets of page protectors. So the price is a little hidden. Adding all of the items up, the difference between the two at the least expensive store, was about $5. Added to that the lifetime guarantee of the CM album, how good they look years later (I have some that are almost 5 years old and still going strong despite the 3 year old)... I think that the CM album is definitely worth it.

To Be Fair... I did NOT take into account any 50% off coupons when I figured the prices above.

Have fun and good luck.

Being that I am new at this and have only used the CM albums. I thought to myself after I typed it, that if I am putting this amount of time into scraping our life memories, might as well put them in a guarenteed album. I am sticking with the CM albums. Thanks again and happy scrapping. :)

I'm not a consultant of any kind and have probably tried just about every type of album out there. Even have a couple spiral bounds from my early attempts.

I really like the quality of Creative Memory albums. What I don't like (and I've tried to get over this) is that metal strip (I think it is called jeeping?) on the edges. I like working out to the edges with borders, etc and that just bothers me. Personal preference only.

But I'm also picky on my top loaders now. I've tried several different brands who profess to lifetime guarantees including Generations and Pioneer. What I don't like about those albums is that they only have two posts. My favorite top load/post bound is Dalee Books. They are comparable to the Creative Memory (in my opinion at least) with regard to the quality in the book, guarantee, etc. They have lots of options for the covers and the page protectors have an "extra" strip between the part that binds in and the part that holds the page. They are also full size - so a 12 x 12 holds a full 12 x 12. The Creative Memories are a little smaller because of that metal stuff. The downside to the Dalee is that they can be harder to come by. My two LSS are no longer carrying them because they are significantly more expensive than other postbound. Fairly comparable to Creative Memories books.

At the same time I have a friend I scrap with regulalry who absolutely SWEARS by her Creative Memory albums but she learned with those and has never used any other kind.

This is usually a pretty personal thing. Whatever you chose enjoy and have fun!

This is a personal choice. I have been searching and searching for the perfect album!
I will agree with others the CM covers are beautiful. But I hate the pages! I don't like the fact I adhere the pictures right to the pages. You need to be very organized if you like doing a 2 page layout. If Cm ever started to sell top loading pages.....I would be sold!
Right now I really seem to like Mrs. Grossman's albums very good deal for your money. YOu get 20 top loading pages. They have a nice edge and beautiful colors.
I think the best to say is keep you mind open. Find a local scrap book store look at what they sell and if you can go to a crop where people can bring what ever they are working on. That way you can see other books.

I'll preface my reply by saying that I'm a Close to My Heart consultant. I had used CM albums for years but wasn't crazy about the strap hinge style and the way things wouldn't lie properly. Plus, some of my staples were pulling. I also didn't like the white jeeping in the middle of my layouts and having to cut down my papers if I was wallpapering the page. Plus, if you wallpaper, you end up paying *twice* for the page!

I loved the flexibility of working in post-bound albums with the top loading pages and no white jeeping, but dust was a concern for me. The CTMH albums come in beautiful top-opening presentation boxes, so I just store them in their boxes -- no more dust problems, and I have my top-loading post-bound albums! :)

The CTMH are nice, too, because they're true 12x12 (no cutting down your papers), have 3 posts instead of just 2, and come in either real leather or a very nice imitation leather.

But you definitely have to shop around and find what you like best and what works best with your scrapping style. :)

Spinning - - I agree with you on the organization required. I am a pretty anal retentive person, and I couldn't do a book without having everythin organized first, so it isn't a problem for me. My mom is a little more free style, and she has had to leave pages in the heritage books for "just in case".

DiznEeyore - - haven't seen the CTMH books. My kids are pulling out their albums all the time, so I don't know if the boxes would work for me... LOL. I also like to see the spine and front of my albums. Mainly because I have them embossed.

I don't do a lot of wallpapering with one paper. If I wallpaper, I usually use at least two pages anyway and have to cut them down somewhere, so that hasn't been an issue for me.

This issue is definitly a personal preference. You'll find people who love and will only use just about every kind of album out there.

What I tell most of friends when they first start out is it really depends on the kind of scrapbooker you are. If you're extremely organized and like to work in order, like white backgrounds or cutting down to wallpaper, then CM albums and albums of the like are probably right up your alley. I love the spine on the CM albums, the albums are very durable and lovely when lined up on a shelf, I have used them for certain projects...like theme albums.

Now, if you're more like me, then a post-bound or other freestyle album may be more up your alley. I personally like to scrap what ever suits my mood or passion at the time. If I'm scrapbooking my christmas pages tonight, but tomorrow I really want to scrapbook my Fourth of July pages, I can without worrying that they won't be in order and how to make sure the layouts in between Christmas and 4th of July work out. I also will break from my chronological album to work on a theme album or gift album, so I'm constantly jumping around, but I'm also very organized, which is why I can work in both types of albums. I also like that I can slide my pages in when they are done for protection, but then rearrange if need be for any reason.

The downsides to the two types. Straphinge - I personally don't like to cut my paper down to fit inside the jeeping, sometimes I even forget then I have to go back and move things around to be able to get it to fit. I have no problem working with white paper, but I love color, cardstock, embellishments, etc...and sometimes, white just isn't the best choice for my pictures. I also don't like the jeeping right down the center, I can deal with it on the sides. I also don't like that if for some odd reason, I have missed a layout in the order it should go, I can't go back and just slide it inbetween the layouts it should go...because those layouts are now back to back, literally. But I do love the durability and spine of the CM albums.

Post-Bound - I love the Dalee brand, but they are hard to come by - usually because they are so popular they sell out quickly. I love their variety of covers, and the strength of the albums and page protectors. Downside - if you don't put spacers between the pages, then you tend to get an aligator mouth. Using the extenders and the spacers will alleviate the problem. The spines aren't the greatest, but there are other companies who've designed post bound albums to have a spine similar to CM's. I've found a way around the spine situation with my Dalee's...I hot glue the spine piece to the front and back covers - works like a charm.

I personally don't believe there is a "right" or "wrong" album to use. I've used several types and companies, whatever suited my project. I would say, experiment, you'll find one you tend to like more, but at least you'll have a working knowledge of several styles that you can use for what ever may strike your fancy. :)

Enjoy the journey - that's what scrapbooking is for. :)

Sorry I was so long winded.:p

I love my CM albums and I have several postbound albums also ( thanks to my loving hubby ). I love the page protectors that come in the postbound , and the true 12x12 size. But if I had to choose I would still choose CM. I know a lot of people do not like that they must cut pages down and tape them to the CM pages . I don't have this problem in part because I simple place my wallpapered pages into the page protector ( untaped ) and they stay in place just fine. If I have to move them around I just take them out and move them to another page . I love the quality of the CM albums , ( I've seen the westrim ) and the lifetime warranity. I put a lot of time and effort into my albums ( not to mention money ) and I want my album to reflect this . I was surprised when CK highlighted the favorite albums of some of the expert scrapbookers. I wasn't surprised that they didn't choose CM , but by the prices ! For the prices they were quoting my CM still came out cheaper ! I agree with everyone else that this is a personal decision. For example , call me crazy but I like the "jeeping" on the end . I think it gives my pages a more finished , professional look . :) By the way , my favorite bostbound albums are the KandCompany albums. I love their detailed paper and stickers , and the albums look like a work of art .

Are k and co. 2 post? I thought they were when I looked at them but not sure after reading your post.

Deb

I'm another that prefers CM (also a CMC), but I love toploading so I simply use Westrim toploading page refills or my really favorite option - CM portrait sleeve pages. Works great.

K&CO used to be a 2 post, but are now a 3 post.

I love Dalee albums, it's funny that you say they are hard to find, because they are the main album available in the UK. That and Pioneer (cause they are cheaper) are available at nearly all the LSS (not that we have many).

I have a collection of post bound albums. I could not work in order, and so I have never tried a strap hinge -they just don't work for my mindset.

Postbound Albums I've tried...

I have Dalee - which I love, mine is absolutely full and it is still very sturdy.

K&Co, which is beautiful, but I have had the cover rip off one. Although to K&Co's credit, they sent me a replacement without any question.

Sandylion Disney album - I just got this, and I haven't tried it yet, but it looks beautiful.

Mrs Grossmans' - I have an 8x8 which I like to look at, but I've
never used it yet....

Scrap Artistry - this is very nice too, but I used it for a gift album so it wasn't very full.

Scrap in a Snap - the quality of this is nice, but I don't really like the shiny covers

I have also had a couple of cheaper one's, a pioneer, and another brand I can't remember, but it was only $15, and in both the page protectors were very thin, and they ripped.

I have no need for another album right now, but I am coveting the Club Scrap Leather one, and also the CTMH leather one, they both look beautiful.

Bev

Thanks Bev. I'll take another look at the K&Co. albums at my LSS and see if they are the 3 post now.

Deb

another vote for the Dalee albums here, I have one that has taken so much abuse from my kids but still looks great. They are a little more pricey then some of the other top loading albums but they just look so good. I love the quality of the refills they just feel so much better then some of the other brands and are true 12X12.

MM has just come out with a new brand of albums that is suppose to be very similiar to the Dalee but a little cheaper. The LSS I work at is carrying them, so I will probably try it for my new album. I am hearing rave reviews of them on the internet.

I have never worked in anything but top loading, as I don't scrapbook in order I couldn't imagine using anything else.

I am also a CMC...but I happened to be in Michael's today and I saw the K and Co. albums....boy are they cute! At this point I won't switch though...I like how all my CM albums line up on the shelf and how I have my subjects color coded (evergreen is for family, cranberry and navy are Disney, black is ds, plum is dd, meadow for the beach...).

I have thought a few times that I'd like to try some different things that would work best with a top loading page (btw, my only experience with top loading is an old 3 ring album purchased at WDW...really awful quality, but I dont' think they sell them anymore)...but I think I'll try some of the ideas here....wallpapering and putting it inside the page protector, or the portrait sleeve pages. I do intend to transfer my old top loading album into CM portrait sleeve pages in a CM album...just haven't ordered the sleeves or the album yet. Even as a CMC, those portrait sleeve pages are expensive!

The jeeping counting towards the 12" is a bit annoying....but I just deal with it. And I actually kind of like the way my 2 page spreads look, even with it in the center!

I am curious about post bound albums though...perhaps someday I'l experiment with one if I have a reason or special project to do (and no more CM albums around...right now I have a few discontinued ones that I'm saving for special projects on my shelves!)

This has been so helpful, the OP must have read my mind. I started scrapping almost 3 years ago when a friend hosted a CM class. Since then, I have moved on to more elaborate scrapping, but I have been frustrated by the CM books. I see I am in the minority, as I hate the covers! I think they look cheap for the price. And now that I am not always working on my pages in order, I have gooten really frustrated. I have about 10 finished pages that I have not glues into the books yet bc I am so fearful that the order will get messed up. I empathize with the poster whose mom has left "just in case" blank pages as I have done that too! I also hate those white strips! I have been too chicken to try any of the other types and brands. All of your advice here has encouraged me to go take the plunge with a new book. Thanks so much!!

Hi: I am fairly new to scrapbooking, and have been sticking with CM products, because, frankly they just are the easiest for me, and I like them best. The FIRST thing I do when I get a CM album, is take the pages OUT to work on them. They come out very easily. I also buy the natural colored pages and add them to the white page albums. I plan on purchasing the black pages also. These pages are really eas to remove from the albums and put back together.
Cant wait! Next week this time I will be in DISNEY and stocking up on DISNEY stickers at the Scrapbooking store in the Village!!!!

Sandy

I have to chime in here because I love the CTMH albums so much. They (and the beautiful papers) were really the reason I became a consultant.

It is such an advantage to not have to scrapbook "in order". With the top-loading pages you can rearrange, move layouts to a different album, etc. and you don't have to worry about ruining a layout you love if you make a big mistake on the back.

I started out with a couple CM albums, but never really liked the look of the straps and staples.

The CTMH albums are so durable, too. I have several that I cart around to workshops and craft shows. They have been handled a bunch, but still look brand new.

Hope you find an album you are happy with and proud to show off!

Good luck and happy scrapping!
