Experience using student tickets and adding days?

Hi, My daughter is going to Disney with her band/choir group. They have some kind of student tickets. My husband and I are thinking of buying our own tickets (regular) and going as well but if we do that we will spend a couple of extra days in the park compared to what the band is staying.

Has anyone had experience adding on days to a student ticket? Its been a few years since I've been to Disney but in the past we could take regular tickets to the front gate to add extra days on the tickets as long as it was prior to the using all the days on the ticket.
