Expedition Everest Challenge

There were definitely kids participating. Some seemed to be doing really well....some it was just too long. But everyone had a blast. FAMILY TRIP!! :)

Thanks! Do you remember how expensive it was to enter? I am wondering what the registration fees (x4 :yay:) are gonna be...

( I sooooo wish they would post the date so we would know if it's gonna be while we're there!!! Please, Disney :worship:... just tell us!)

Hmmm...I don't remember specifically. I know there were discounts for early registration that we didn't get. I am THINKING it was $219 for a team of 2. So, for you and your fam it would be 219*2. Like I said there was an early registration that was like 20 bucks cheaper or something. Not positive about that price but I think it was about that. I wish they'd tell us too!! If it's the weekend in May that is rumored, that is college graduation and my teammate will be out. :( So...I'm hoping for one of the June weekends.

June would be good, although if it is the Thursday people are speculating that's terrible! My younger brother is still in high school and that's be his last day :sad2:

Anyway, I just emailed the sports people and asked them if and when it would be in 2011, or when that information would be available. Hope they respond quickly :goodvibes

This is the e-mail I got from Disney Sports today:

We will have the Expedition Everest Challenge again in 2011 we
should have more information up in the early part of December. Thank you

Disney Sports

This info was suuuuper helpful :lmao:

This challenge looks really interesting but I'd never heard of it before this thread. I hope you're right and more info comes out soon (early December) because I'd love to try it.

Received this response today from Disney sports:

Connie -
The tentative date for the Everest Challenge is Sat. May 7.
Online registration will open later this fall.
Thanks,
Sports

Personally I am disappointed, June was much better for me...

Really Disney -college finals week??? At most schools- that really stinks! What's going on there in the first week of June that necessitates a change anyway?

Linda

I know they're at different parks (DHS versus AK) but they might be trying to off set the increase in attendance that happens with Star Wars weekends late May and early June especially with a rumoured re-opening of Star Tours at the middle to end of May? That's the only 'big thing' I can think of around that time.

Bummer... we won't be able to do it as a family. Maybe DH and I can plan a couples weekend... On the bright side, it should be cooler weather!

OMG.. I can't believe it.. I had a really rough year this year (3 surgeries in 3 weeks and cancer) and one of my dreams had always been to run the Boston Marathon ( I am so NOT a runner).. But, I haven't fully recooperated yet and I just don't think I am going to enough time to train for a marathon.. BUT.... I just so happen to be going to WDW the first week in May.. I already made my ressies and.. low and behold.. AK is booked for May 7th.. Its like fate.. I would love to do this.. I will have to find a teamate though.. Hubby will have to take care of our 5 year old...

It appears the date of May 7th is official now. They have it posted on the Run Disney website.

So excited there will be a 2011 Expedition Everest! :woohoo: It's the day before we leave for vacation in TN but I wouldn't miss it, I can't wait. I'm gonna run single again. Hoping to improve on last years 18th place finish, my goal is top 10.

This looks like a BLAST!! I'd love to do this with my son, who will be 16 by then.
I saw the post a ways back about what the race itself entails, but can anyone give me more info about the whole experience? Do you dedicate your whole Saturday to the race? Is there a party in the evening (I think I read that?). Do you have to be there really early to register/pick up bibs, etc. I wonder if my son and I could do this as a long weekend (we're in MA)?

Thanks!

I think they wanted to find another race to fill the May slot that was left empty by the Minnie Marathon 15k that always was that weekend in May. The Princess half was supposed to be what filled that spot but for some reason they keep moving the Princess closer and closer to the January Marathon's not sure why.

But I am glad this is back in May - I did it the first year with my DH when it was in September. I might do it in 2011 with my niece - I know she would love to do it with me.

We had a great time last year but looks like we are def, out this year- DD has college finals.

Great memories!

Linda

I am wanting to do this challenge - it will be my first experience at doing any type of 5K. My wife wants too, but we may not know until later (closer to the date) for her. Is it possible, if she can't participate that I can take her into the after hours party?

Last year, guests (non-participants) could buy a party ticket. If my memory is right, it was something like $39 per person (but this amount could be wrong). Non-participants could enter AK about an hour after the race started (again, that could be off by a bit, but I know it was at least somewhat later) and meet up with participants for the last 3 to 4 hours of in-park time. Lines were super short for the few attractions open, and it was lots of fun. So, although I highly recommend doing the race/hunt together if at all possible (and the timing is slow enough that as long as you are walking quickly, you can walk the entire 5k and still finish), meeting up for the after-party is also definitely possible. The scavenger hunt part of the race was my favorite part, so having her join you only for the after-party cuts out a section of the fun/specialness of this event.
