Exhausted from parenting/ASD children/Welcome to Schmolland!

 Hello MRYPPNS!
I noticed your spectrum moms unite trip ticker... please link us all to your thread so we can pop by and say hello!

Daisy&Max

We really appreciate that teachers and others in the educational structure give us there perspectives. The reality is that the vast majority of the EDs in the general education environment do not receive current training on either ASD or IDEA federal regulations and are supervised by people who have little more SPED training for the general education environment, as for teachers I have found the overwhelming majority exceptionally committed to trying to help and they are just as frustrated as the parents by the lack of continuing education offerings and administrative competency and support (I do a lot of teacher education, this is a big part of the reason I am in the process of developing a HFA/Aspergers in the general education "101" course for my state).

I have one school administrator and 2 teacher who I consider true heros for helping (saving) my child and they have our lifelong gratitude and support. I am a firefighter so I do not use that term lightly.

Added up that's an extra school day spent riding the bus weekly (8 hrs 30 mins) ... AND thats only calculating the AM!

Ignore this link if you don't want to join me in stalking KFK: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2526288 Seriously, we don't wanna miss out on those precious little faces at Disney, KFK!!!

Thanks for doing the math for me Kat! Now double it! :scared1:

Feel free to stalk me on the Boards...but, if you ever see me in person

PLEEEEEEAAAAASSSEEEEE just walk right up and say HI! Actual stalking freaks me out. :rotfl2:

Feel free to chime in on the TR too! I warn you...it's long. I can be chatty.

Wow! Between this and the teacher bashing on the community board I'm beginning to think this isn't the place for a special ed teacher. :( Maybe its because I'm sick but it really hurts to hear people paint a group with one broad brush.

Daisy

Awww....you know we love you. It's the pencil pushers who only care how things look on paper who are the prob! We've been blessed w/ the Awesomest of the Awesome teachers, aids and therapists. I know you fall in that group! ;)

Daisy, I think DD had a couple of teachers that saved her whole school career. Her 3rd grade teacher was a saint, so was the gifted teacher. I haven't seen that thread, think I'll skip it.

I love trip reports! Off to read KFK's.

:thumbsup2 to both comments.

That was me :yay: I found it...very funny. It's Post #33 if any newbies are interested in finding it.

Glad you found it. Now everything should make sense...

Well....at least as much sense as can be made in Schmolland. :lmao:

Some of you may remember my Adventures with the Carpet Shampooer a while back.

I have another adventure to share.

I was finishing the last bit of my TR when DS5 walks over and has toothpaste all over his mouth. Assuming he'd just been in the bathroom eating toothpaste, I didn't react in a very big way. Then I heard my oldest DS shouting..."Mama, come here, quick, look!!!!".

DS5 had squirted, squished and ground the toothpaste into the hall carpet.

Toothpaste isn't easy to clean out of carpet, but....

It'll sure leave your floor smelling minty fresh! Much better than the OTHER adventures I was having. :rotfl2:

Ya'll have a great day wherever you are in Schmolland! :flower3:

Yeah! Kampfirekim is back!!!:cool1::cheer2::yay: And thanks for the link to her trip report! I wanted to find it but was too lazy to look for it! I've read a few pages and it's great!!!

Daisy&max-I'm sorry you felt a little beat on as a special ed teacher! I can say my son's teachers have all been wonderful! I feel very lucky because our school system is excellent with kids on the spectrum! I tell people all the time how great they are but I rarely tell them! I will have to remember to let the teachers and administrators know how much I appreciate their work with my son. I'll bet you have many parents that talk highly of you and think of you as saving their son but maybe don't always tell you! Keep up the good work, the kids need you!

Oh, and I'm going to read the spectrum mom's trip report! Sounds fun!

Glad to be back.....well back on this thread anyway. IWRBND too! :lmao:

Other than DS' obsession with having a HUGE collection of tiny toys and parts, things have been fairly quiet around our Schmollish home.

He'll be starting back w/equestrian therapy in a couple of weeks. Yay!!! Does anyone else do that too? DS loves it and it really seems to help him in a lot of ways.

Question: Are any of you on FB? I'd love to connect w/some of you if anyone is interested.

Are there are any takers? If so...just PM me.

Today was the first day of school, DS in now in 2nd grade and for the first part of the year the class has a substitute. She was not in our IEP meeting that went on for hours.

In her wisdom, she said she didn't want aides in the room so she could experience DS and she how it goes. When DS got home I asked how it was, he said she put in by himself and the kids think he is poo poo head. OK???

But wait, it gets better. DS pulled a tooth by himself. YEAH:yay: Went into the bathroom to wash his tooth. I didn't think a thing about it so while I worked out, ate some dinner, I saw DS watching TV and didn't think a thing about it. But then late he comes out and says he forgot to turn off the water in the sink. AND.....there is some water on the floor. No there is a full blown flood. He plugged the sink and the water was past the floor boards trim. It went under and into the kitchen where it went down the side with windows. The water also drenched the duct system for our heating. It is under the house and then the water went out of the duct system onto and soaking the insulation.

Yes, I live in Schmolland.

Let me see if I've got this straight.

Your child has an IEP.

There is not a regular teacher....only a substitute.

How does SHE get to make the call as to whether or not there is an aid in the room to begin with?

And why was your DS isolated from the class and called a poo poo head?

Sounds like another visit to the school may be in order.

Something seems amiss to me.....or am I up too late and just need to go to bed?

Sorry about your flood. Such is life in Schmolland. :flower3:

That substitute teacher would make me mad!!!:headache: And the flood would make me sad:sad1:!!! Sorry you had a day like that! I hope today is better and I notice you go to europe soon! At least you have something to look forward to! Seeing europe is on my "bucket list"!

Kampfirekim, I'm on fb and I'll pm you!

Okay, I got nuthin compared to the flood story!!!

I thought it was bad when dd locked all of us out of the connecting room at the Ramada in Florence SC, but you've put it in perspective for me!:lmao:

Seriously, I'm sorry. I hope this all dries out without you having to call contractors to replace anything.

I don't have words for that Sub that are acceptable in company... so  Remember- Tomorrow is another day;)

Small Schmolland story, nothing major thank goodness.

Last night there was an open house for the band parents at my older DSs middle school. Since my DH wasn't able to watch the kids I had to take them w/ me. Not a huge deal, other parents had their kids w/ them too. However I was the only Smutch parent there. My little Smutch Boy spent most of the meeting running between the glass door to watch the volleyball game across the hall in the gym to sitting on my lap and squeezing the beejeezus out of me. When the guest trumpeter came on my DS immediatley put his hands over his ears and yelled "Too WOUD!" That was before the guy even started playing, once he got started my DS got into it though, grinning ear to ear. After that was over we were invited to go talk to the various folks able to provide private lessons. So I went to hunt down the trumpet guys for my older DS. The whole time I was doing that my little Smutch boy ran all over the place making his roller coaster noises. I heard one kid say "Look Mom, there's V, he's artistic." LOL!

I thought the same thing....I almost flamed.

Then I remembered Schmollish law: NO FLAMES ALLOWED.

Welcome, Kathy!

Cute story, Brightsy!

I have a not-so-cute story for you all. I always hear stories about helicopter moms, but I admit that I never see this with special needs kids. We always strive for independence, right? It's even discussed in IEP's. Well, I saw my first helicopter special needs mom. I shared this on a thread on the community board yesterday. I thought I should share it here.

My 2 ds's are in a special needs swim class. There are 8 kids (some autistic and some with down syndrome) and 4 instructors, plus a life guard watching over the kids. I've always paid for private lessons, but thought this was a great opportunity to allow the kids to be part of a group swim lessons with other kids like them.

What us moms do is drop our kids off at pool-side, then go behind a glass wall to chat, read, or watch our kids. Well, this one mom paced along the side of the pool, following her kid as he participated in swim class. It appeared to me like she was barking orders to the swim instructors, but I couldn't hear since I was behind the class.

Now, keep in mind that there was a 2-1 ratio for the kids, plus a life guard. The instructors were doing a great job with these kids. I was very impressed. Well, not this mom. She ended up jumping in the pool, clothes on and all. :scared1: I guess she figured she needed to get her point across to the instructors. She said her peace, then got out of the pool and started pacing along the side again. I felt bad for the instructors. I felt bad for the kid. I have never seen anything like that. Her son seemed to be doing fine. The only thing that I could think of was that she wanted someone to hold her sons' hand the entire time. If she wanted that, she should have paid for group lessons then.

Anyway, that's my helicopter mom story. I have to admit, I work really hard at not hovering over my kids. I always kick myself because I find myself being over-protective. Well, after seeing that mom, I realize I'm doing just fine.

:artist: That was too precious, Brightsy! I love it!

Nik's Mom- WOW! That must have been quite a sight... very sad for the kid.

YIKES!!!!! Forget about the instructors. POOR KID!!!!!!

I'm no helicopter mom either. When leaving the house I have no problems prying those little fingers out of my arm and telling DS to "get back before the door pinches you". :lmao:

I probably would have shoved him through the door and burned rubber out of the parking lot on my way to a restaurant or something. ;)

Independence is our goal in Schmolland. They'll never learn it if we cling too tightly.
