We are booked on the Oasis for a western mediterranean cruise in July. For those who have experience, we are trying to keep excursion prices as low as possible (though if the excursion is really special we may pony up), and also trying to avoid guided tours. We all find them boring, and would rather roam on our own (unless its something like a boat trip to an island, of course).

Our ports are
PALMA DE MALLORCA, SPAIN PROVENCE(MARSEILLE), FRANCE FLORENCE/PISA(LASPEZIA)ITALY ROME (CIVITAVECCHIA), ITALY NAPLES, ITALY

Thoughts on excursions please. Thank you!

Go into your cruise planner and review the ones that are listed. Then you can make an informed decision.

Yes, i know, but I wanted opinions from people who have taken these types of excursions in those cities.

Get a copy of Rick Steve's Mediterranean Cruise Ports. It is a great resource if you want to DIY or just to get ideas about what is in the area. Also, check out the Ports of Call board on Cruise Critic for more ideas. Join a roll call over there or search for your cruise on FB.

Here is what my family has done for some of your ports:

Marseille - We took the public bus to the main station, walked to Vieux Port and just spent the day wandering, shopping and eating (we have been to France many times though so did not need to do a big excursion)

Livorno - We docked here instead of La Spezia. We took the cruise line On Your Own excursion. Unfortunately, we were there on Monday when all the museums are closed so we just walked around, checked out the Duomo (super long line so we did not go in), ate lunch and gelato, walked to see the synagogue (which was closed too because it was also a Jewish holiday). We are going on another Med cruise in 2020 and going back to Florence as it is not a Monday and plan to go to the Pitti Palace. Most people want to see David at the Accademia but we are ok not doing this.

Civitavecchia - Take the train into Rome. Purchase a BIRG ticket which also gives you unlimited metro and bus travel in Rome. We spent our day at the Vatican Museums. It is huge and there is so much to see. We were able to do this because we also spent 4 days in Rome post cruise and did not need to run all over the city in one day.

Naples - We took the local bus to Pompei. We did a dIY walking tour using the Rick Steve's book. Spent about 3 hours and then back to Naples for pizza and shopping.

I'm a huge fan of immersing yourself and not trying to do it all. I know a lot of people may never get back to Europe but I think you sell yourself short when you try to cram too much into your day.

That is really helpful. Thanks!

We did a lot of those ports on our Med in 2017. However, we're tour people so we had a tour in every port. Most of our tours were small and shared with people on our Cruise Critic roll call. And most them weren't really guided so much as they took us places and picked us up when we were done with that area. I think we used shareashoreexcursion.com. Have you been to the Cruise Critic site? They have a great section on ports of call. I'm sure you can find lots of information on the DIY things in each port. We had an amazing time in the Med. We sailed the NCL Spirit there, but we were just on Allure last October and it was great, so I'm sure Oasis will be awesome. Best of luck!

Is Barcelona one of your endpoints? I highly recommend taking a couple of extra days there if it is.

Yes! And we are arriving a day early to our cruise and staying an extra day to explore. Can't wait. Staying at Hotel Casa Fuster when arriving and changing it up to Hotel DO Plaça Reial when we disembark. Have you stayed at either of these hotels? They look amazing but I am going off reviews. Never been to Barcelona.

I stayed there for a week in an Airbnb. Tried to live (somewhat) like a local.

You’ll love it there.

We did more or less the same ports (we had 7) 11 years ago with Disney. 11 Night Med. cruise.

trvlggirl has some great suggestions. Read up reports (cruise critic), books/websites. Very important to give yourself enough time to get back to the ship.

Having said that, we were two families. We did not want to worry about transportation, strikes, etc. so we booked most of them through DCL. We have done many excursions on our own. Just need to read up on all of them. The only port we did on our own for the med cruise was Palermo (where I am from/had family pick us up).

It was one of our best cruises. Enjoy!!

Barcelona is amazing! You must go see the Magic Fountain. So much fun and the views are great. The Barri Gotic area is so cool. The history will blow you away. We spent 6 nights there pre-cruise and still didn't get to do all we wanted. Our next Med Cruise embarks there again and we will probably stay at least 2 days to explore some more.

Forgot to mention that if you’re planning on going to La Sagrada Familia or Park Guell to book way ahead of time, or you might not get in.

If you had more time I’d say to go to Montserrat but keep that in mind the next imtime you’re there.
