Exchanging package tickets for AP prices?

Essentially the title of my thread is the point of my question; but a little back story. I love going to Disney parks and as a present for my parents 40th wedding anniversary several years ago I took them on their 1st Disney trip, staying at the Disneyland Hotel and we had an amazing trip (my treat, their anniversary gift). Last year my parents mentioned wanting to go to DLP again so we booked a trip for Halloween. 3 weeks before our trip my mum went into hospital, a week later she had a quadruple heart bypass so the trip was obviously off for them; I wasn't actually certain for a while that my mum would survive due to some other issues. She now feels much better and yesterday they rebooked a DLP trip with their friends who have never been before. As DH and I have Dream AP's and had already discussed going again for Halloween I would love to plan the trip again with them but for this Halloween. So would it be better for them to swap their passes for Dream AP's during their trip in May (I do not know how much this would cost, but if they did this on their 1st day they could get AP discounts in shops and restaurants) rather than get tickets for the duration of a Halloween stay? Or should they have their trip and then we get tickets for them for a Halloween trip? DH and I are going in August again to renew our AP's, so they could come with us them instead or as well if they wanted.
Sorry for a long post, but I want to go to DLP with may parents again and would love advice on the best way to do this.

Not totally sure I understand your post, but if you're parents have tickets as part of a hotel package then these tickets have a zero value attached to them - think they are endorsed "forfite" - if so they cannot be upgraded to a AP

I'm so glad your mum is feeling up to a trip now :).
Short answer is, you can't get any discount off buying an AP using park tickets included in a hotel/park tickets package (as the park tickets have no value on their own if booked through a package).

Thanks, wasn't sure if their package tickets had any value or not. I guess we will research nearer the time if it is better to buy AP's for them if we go for Halloween or to buy park tickets for the days we will be there. gavvy, sorry you were unable to understand my post; I tried to explain it the best I could. You did however answer my question, thank you.
