Exchanging for non Disney resorts.....

Hi Neighbors,
I'm one of the new kids on the block as we are still awaiting our 1st trip "home". I'm not sure about the trading out part to other resorts that are non Disney. I'm hoping someone could assist me in trading out 101. I see in the DVC member handbook a bunch of listings, but then I hear of people trading to places in Martha's Vinyard and Williamsburg, VA. that are not listed in the book or on the web site that I can find. How does this work and where can I find info on nitely rates as opposed to weekly. Thank you all!

You can trade out via II, so call MS and ask about it. II has a huge book, about an inch thick, of all kinds of properties you can trade to. Most of them are below the quality of Disney or Marriott, and most book by the week. As far as I know, Disney requires a week's worth of points, but I have never traded thru them, I usually use my Marriott week instead. Be aware that trading out can be expensive compared to staying at a DVC resort.

We have another timeshare that we use to trade out and even then, some of the II properties aren't as nice as ours. Most people on this board think that Disney is too expensive to trade for something else. Only about 425 of the 1900 II resorts. But it's not just due to quality issues, there are other reasons that resorts are not on the list.

Dean, what are the other reasons? I just assumed (due to responses on these boards) that it was based on "quality"....so it would be interesting to me to hear your thoughts.

LOL, I think a lot of people fit into the assume group on this BBS esp when it comes to this topic.. The one's I know for certain are these.

1. New resorts are not usually added until information is available on quality and deposit availability, see #2. It usually takes around 2 years so about the earliest one could count on staying at a new exchange resort would be around 3 years after it opened.
2. Resorts that don't get many deposits are usually not included and that was at least part of the reason Atlantis was taken off. A very poor choice in my book as there were temporary reasons why this was the case with Atlantis.
3. Resorts within the Orlando area, I think it's a radius of 45 miles, are not included and in the timesharing world, this is a fairly large chunk of the top resorts.

I can see the last one to a degree but I think DVC does the members a disservice on the first two. The best times to get an exchange into new resorts is usually when they are still selling, this is especially true for Marriott. And given that DVC has high trade power, I'd rather have a 2% chance of getting into a top resort than none at all. Plus I think that being regular members of II would be a lot better for many owners and all those that wanted to exchange out periodically into II. I won't go through the list again, I've done it several times before. To my knowledge, DVC is the only timeshare system that limits exchanges out, at least to this degree or with this method. Many limit exchanges in with II using a regional block. I feel it just shows DVC's opinion of their members. They are telling you that you're not capable of making the exchange decision yourself.

Not that I know of - unless you want to stay at one of the non-DVC WDW resorts, LOL

As noted by Carol, they are for a full week. But that doesn't mean you must stay a full week. You can frequently rent from members of others systems, esp points systems, for less than a full week. And if you own certain systems, you can frequently get a few day rental directly for pennies, basically the cost of cleaning in many situations.
