From the passporter guide book to the posts here, the shrimp seem to be such a selling point. But, what's the deal? What makes them SO good?

Just wondering...

They are just boiled shrimp on ice, but they are big & plentiful. You don't often see such a big pile of boiled peel & eat shrimp. It's a nice treat.

They are huge and tasty. Just a nice way to start a wonderful vacation!!!

They were just shrimp that had to be peeled. A real vacation treat for me would have been iced shrimp already peeled. They were no better than any other peel and eat shrimp I've ever encountered.

Shrimp that are already peeled do not hold up as well on ice and quickly develop an unpleasant texture. I'll happily peel away.

The shrimp served during brunch at Palo are already peeled. As for the other, unpeeled shrimp, I still think they are on the large side compared to what one would typically find when getting peel and eat shrimp.

I suspect if they were much better, someone would complain the little buggers are ordinary because they won't automatically walk up your arm into your mouth - you actually have to pick them up. :teeth:

Likewise, they have crab legs that are already cracked open for the most part.

WE just got back from our 13th DCL cruise, this time on the Wonder. The shrimp onboard were better than I remember from previous cruises!! Big and tasty....

Agreed. I've gotten equal or better from the local grocery store. I'm not even close to a seafood gourmet, but I didn't find anything that exceptional about the ones on the boarding buffet.

For excellent shrimp, these are the ultimate.

Pfaelzer Giant Jumbo shrimp

They are actually much bigger than the picture. We get them once a year as a treat.

Having grown up on the Chesapeake Bay I've had my share of shrimp. Shrimp spoil very quickly. Good shrimp is fresh off the boat, or quick frozen thereafter and eaten as close to thawing time as possible. The shrimp on board are good quality in the above regards and nothing more.

If you are a shrimp afficianado then they are nothing special but are still good. If you don't have access to good quality shrimp back home or rarely have shrimp but love them, then they are a treat. My favorite are steamed in beer and spicy with Old Bay.

I live near the North Carolina coast, so I understand and appreciate good seafood. Whilst I've had better elsewhere, I still think of the shrimp onboard as being a decent treat.

Other seafood, like the sushi for instance, leaves a lot to be desired.

<sheesh> Now I'm wondering whether there are any fish houses open this morning. I'm ready for some Calabash-style fried shrimp and scallops. mmmmmmmmm.....

Are these shrimp only available during Palo brunch?

The shrimp are served several times: during the embarkation day lunch buffet, I think during the seafood buffet, and during brunch at Palo. The shrimp at the 2 buffets are peel and eat. The shrimp at Palo brunch are already peeled.

LOL! No... I couldn't think of a creative way to photograph those little dudes.

Besides, at some point I have to put the camera down, else my wife would divorce me.

At brunch, I think they were cold. You can request drawn butter.

They also have stone crab claws at brunch at during the seafood buffet. The crab claws are pre-cracked.

I honestly didn't care so much for either the crab legs or the claws.

I really didn't think the shrimp were that big.....maybe my expectations were high because of the people here, or maybe we just get really nice shrimp at places we frequent. In any case, I stick with my thought that they were just peel and eat shrimp.....can I dare to say you could likely get the same ones on the Friday night seafood buffet at Shoney's. :bitelip:

On my first cruise, I remember eating them and thinking they were good - But couldn't eat too much because I had a big breakfast at the hotel (didn't know about the lunch once you get onboard) - But thinking, no big deal, they will serve them throughout the cruise - WRONG!!!!!!! I didn't see them again for the rest of the cruise -

Let's just say, I won't be making that mistake again!

They sound pretty good to me!! I'll be waiting on them! :earsgirl: :smooth: :bounce:
