So I had my first driving lesson yesterday and it was great. My instructor tested me on my theory first and thought that I'd been swotting up well (thanks to the books that my old company bought as one of my leaving presents). He thought my steering was good and I managed to stay at 30 mph (which I found quite hard in an automatic). He had me going up this industrial road with loads of lorries which was quite scary and I went around a roundabout - how about that??!!

Next lesson is on Thursday then I have 3 next week, 2 the 2 weeks after that and then we're off on holiday to Cyprus so I'll probably have forgotten it all by the time I get back.

I have to say that I noticed the difference immediately driving an automatic and I felt more confident about the road as I didn't have to keep thinking about changing bloomin' gear.

Can't wait to get on that road again

Sounds like you are coming along quite nicely! Although an automatic transmission is nice when learning to drive, makes it easier to concentrate on steering and all, don't discount the value of learning to shift! My Dad "made" me learn on a manual and I still drive one today. Ultimately, once mastered, you have more control of the car.

I only drive an automatic -I've been driving for about 15 years now, and I have tried a manual a few times, I know I could learn how to do it, but I just can't be bothered to take lessons and retake my test.

I have had a number of cars, all automatic, and have been very happy with all of them - I've never felt like I wasn't in control of the car.

The only downside, is that if you buy 2nd hand cars, as I do, then there is much less choice when you are looking for a new car. If you buy new cars, then you can get an automatic in most models, but they tend to be more expensive models.

Way to go Sam!

I passed my test in an Automatic after miserable failing a manual test three times - then last year (after 8years of driving) actually passed my manual test with no problem.

Wow Janice that is great news to hear I never knew that!!! I just want to be able to drive in the first instance and then I'll think about taking manual but only if I feel the need.

I've also got a freiend like you Bev who learnt to drive in automatic when she was 17 and has been driving auto for the past 20 years and she's never needed to drive manual.
