You are in line with a lot of other folks and suddenly it is announced that everyone must go somewhere else (not far) and line up again (no pre-existing line over there). Is it okay to put yourself in the new line (cut if you insist) approximately where you were in the old line, merging in if need be?

Not to say whether you should do so or whether you should prevent others from doing so, just whether you feel it is right or wrong.

Inspired by a recent thread where someone mentioned that people lined up to board an airplane were all told to go to another gate. Don't know of any situations an a park where this might apply otherwise I would have posted in the Theme Parks forum.

One of my most favorite things about WDW. A line forms for bus at say DTD. The bus pulls up in a slightly different spot and everyone closest to the bus jumps on with no regards to who has been waiting the longest. WDW should have line ropes at EVERY stop, like they do at the parks.

Great, thanks alot Seashore, got me all worked up this early in the morning! lol

I changed my mind after reading your question. If the line is right next to each other, then yes, you should maintain the same position. But you talking about the whole group moving to another gate, perhaps across the airport, then no, every man for himself. Now I don't mean that in a rude way, but there's no way the original line will stay the same.

Did the announcement say anything regarding keeping your position in line? Otherwise it's not OK to cut. A new line is forming and it's "everyone for themselves".

The way you prhased your question "line up again" is ambiguous and might cause some people to infer they should keep their same position. A gate change announcement just announces the new gate. A new line with passengers getting a new position in the new line.

I voted no because the line won't be in the same order as it was previously. Once you leave an area to go board at another gate the line gets so mixed up there is no way to reclaim your own spot. How do you determine where you "deserve" to be in that line? Do you cut in front of the person you were in front of before? Do you see who is the furthest forward in the line who was behind you before? You could show up and the person immediately behind you in the previous line might now be last in line but the person who was second behind you in the previous line might be first in the new line, do you step in front of the people at the back of the line or do you decide that since the person at the front of the line was behind you in the previous line they should be behind you in this line and that makes you now first in line.

Nope, every man for himself. And I probably wouldn't tolerate cutting to restore the old line order unless I was feeling very generous that day.

I also voted no, because by the time you get to the other gate there will be no way to restore the original line. What if people just walking in saw the gate change on the screen and when you got to the other gate they were already standing in line. It's just too many variable to contend with in a situation like that. In such cases you can make like a bread truck and haul your buns to the next gate.

Short of an airline rep taking the front of the line and "guiding" everyone to the new gate destination single file, I would have to say it just won't end up the same as at the original gate.

That being said, I would hope most people would try to be courteous. I'm thinking it would basically go along the lines of "RUNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!";)

Voted 'no'....a line is a very fluid thing. I would imagine that it would be very hard to maintain any order if people were trying to move, as well as maintain their previous spot. Especially if it was any distance to the next line.
I tend to allow those who were in front of me in a line go to the newly opened register when someone comes along and says 'register 4 is now open'. But, I don't think that would work in a larger setting...especially knowing how people are in airports or theme parks...then it's every man for himself! Sad to say.
Besides...lets say the line is about 50 people long. Along comes someone and tells the line that they have to move to gate 21, when they are at gate 2. So...obviously those toward the rear of the line will be able to get to gate 21 faster...many fewer people to navigate through. Does anyone really think that those rear of the line people are going to stand there, patiently waiting for the front of the line to snake around, like a conga line, towards gate 21? Don't think so.

I think goofy4tink has the perfect solution ..... a conga line through the terminal .... now who wouldn't love that?!?!?! :cool1: :woohoo: :dance3::dance3: :dance3: :dance3: :dance3: :dance3: :dance3:

PLEASE don't encourage her... first she tries to make this place all kissyhuggywarmandfuzzy when we know that there is no pixie dust in Transportation. Now she tried to bring in a conga line??!!!!

She's just TRYING to get rid of me again! ;)

And no, the line does not reform. You haven't seen how fast I can walk so I would beat you all to the new gate :rotfl2:

Having had some time to consider this, I would like to change my answer please Alex.

(The anti-huggykissy part still stands...)

Why are we standing in line? is this a line waiting to board the aircraft? if so, why are you not all seated until your seating zone is called? Why would you be lining up before preboarding has begun? SIT DOWN PEOPLE!

and as we have already established on another thread, I am one of the 'special' people. ;) So when we get to the new gate, I will STILL be first of the line as I get to board on the magic red carpet ahead of all of you who have to board from the normal grey carpet, and only when your zone is called :rolleyes1

I was thinking the same thing, then I realized, they must be referring to Southwest.

:hippie:  :cheer2: :flower3: pixiedust: I just love my little ole Transportation Board. :dance3: carry on people!!!

I always thought the advantage of "being special" is being able to get to the airport late, getting to the gate late and being one of the last passengers to board.:confused3

This would only matter with an airline that doesn't assign seats (SW). I guess the concern would be a passenger that camped out to be at the front of the "A" Que, for an exit row seat, would lose that place in line when the line moved due to a gate change. My answer is the same, that person can't expect to cut in front just because they were in front of the old line.

.

Twelve minutes from the front door of the airport to check in, drop bags, clear Customs/Immigration, clear security, and walk to the gate. BUT first in line to board to avoid not having bin space due to bin hogs.

Doesn't make sense, does it??

It does for us "commoners" who fly economy class. I thought you generally got upgraded to business class. I thought there were more then enough bin space in the front of the plane.

Sadly, TED has only 'commoner' ;) class.... :rotfl: Actually, I prefer UA Economy Plus bulkhead rows to UA Business/First. Problem with that row is no underseat storage so everything needs to go into the bin, and the bins fill quickly. Even signage on the bin doesn't prevent people from further back putting things into the bin specifically identified as reserved for the bulkhead row.
