EVEREST... should I be scared?

Wow, I haven't been on the Theme Parks Attractions board in soooo long... that's where i started out a couple years back but then moved to the CB after my WDW trip. Hi everyone!

So we're thinking of going to WDW next year and I'm debating about going on Everest. The only thing I'm worried about is getting that dropping feeling in my stomach on long drops... I HATE it! I love BTMRR, but that doesn't have any long drops. I can handle speed, bumpiness, scary things popping out at me, going upside down, I just cannot stand the dropping feeling. I tolerate Splash Mountain, but don't think I could handle much more of a drop than that. I've never been on RnR because I'm afraid of the fast start; I've been on a similar fast start ride and hated that feeling just as much as going down a steep hill. I'm sure I'd love the rest of RnR though since I've read a lot about it; I just can't bring myself to get through those first 3 seconds! As for Space Mountain, I mostly like it, but some of those fast little drops juuust start to get to me...

So, I was wondering if anyone can give me a description of Everest. Are there any huge drops? If so, are they steep? I've heard it goes backwards at one point, but is the scariness factor due to the mere surprise of it switching directions or does it go fast down a steep grade? Are there any spots that you recall getting that stomach-dropping feeling?

I appreciate as much or as little advice as you care to give. If you feel like giving a play by play of the ride, awesome! Don't worry about spoiling anything for me, I'd much rather know what I'm getting myself into since I'm a scaredy cat when it comes to roller coaster drops and if I don't know enough about it beforehand then I won't go on it.

TIA!

Well the drop on EE is longer than Splash, but to me it didn't feel that way, Splash seems to be steeper and EE curves taking some of that dropping feeling away. I hate drops too, but I really enjoyed EE. The backwards part is a little disconcerting because it's in the dark and you feel like you go upside down - even though you don't. I personally loved EE, I say give it a try - it's a great ride!

That's just the type of info I'm looking for, thanks! I know what you mean about curved drops taking some of the dropping feeling away, I know a couple rides in other parks that are like that.

I am also curious about this. The only part of roller coasters that I don't like is the big hill.

There is really only one part that is potentially scary for you...and that is when you go backwards in the dark. I screamed for a few seconds because it is in the dark and makes you fell like you are falling so fast and far, but it really only lasts a few seconds. Besides that it curves and there aren't really any big drops. I was scared to go too because I am not the biggest fan of crazy coaster and didn't think it was any worse than the drop at Splash Mountain. Also....I kind of bribed my 6 year old to try it so we could go on it. He liked it and tried SPlash Mountain for the first time too after that.
It is really cool with the effects and the Yeti. I think you will regret it if you don't try...you will be fine especially if you can handle the Splah Mountain drop.
Enjoy!

Just do it. The big drop is at the end and it does have that curve. The rest o fit i sworth seeing though for sure.

Here's a video of the ride. It shows you how dark the backwards part is and how steep the drop is.
Honestly, I don't like the Splash drop, but I don't mind the EE drop at all. With Splash, the build-up is so scary, on EE, you don't even know the drop is coming till it's almost over.
Also, don't forget to appreciate all the little touches they designed into the queue and the ride, to keep it authentic to the Yeti legend.

the ride is awesome!!!! something u should definately go on. ap said that the drop on ee is curved so u don't get the drop in the stomach feeling is absolutely right - i usually get it too - like on spalsh mtn. and ToT - but not on ee, i really think the curves don't make it feel as bad. and i know the speeds never changed, but to me it felt like we were going faster when we were going backwards - but it was reallllllly awesome!!

Yes!! Be very scared. I love BTMR, but hated EE. I don't like roller coasters, but was talked into riding. What was I thinking?? I had my eyes closed the whole time, only saw the Yeti before going backwards, so there wasn't really any purpose to going on the ride. I didn't see anything. My DD and girlfriend loved it.

Considering I went on EE 4 times in a row in 1 day, I love it! When you go in the dark, you go uphill, BUT it's very steep and you get a weird feeling in your stomach. The steep drop turns at the bottom and goes back up into a tunnel, than drops again, that does a small fast loop all the wap up where you meet the yeti. You can sure feel G-Force.

I only rode it three times on the day we were at AK over Christmas, but I remember being surprised by the backwards part because I felt like we were going backwards UPHILL. :confused3 Maybe that's why some people get the feeling that you go upside down (which isn't what happens, but it does feel that way a bit to some, I guess). I found it to be really fun. I felt some pressure on my chest/upper back during the backwards part but it didn't hurt or anything - just the pressure of moving at that speed, backwards, uphill. The downhill drop didn't make my stomach drop at all, and I'm usually pretty sensitive to that and feel like it goes on forever (not that that keeps me off the ride :thumbsup2 ). Anyways, the first hill is what I like to call a "clicky clicky" hill (that's the very techinical term) that moves you up slowly. You get great views of MGM and Epcot in the distance. In the back, the ride is wilder, so if you want a smoother ride, request the front.

Hope this helps. My mom, who is a bit intimidated by rides like this, really liked it and rode it twice. Take a chance and ride it - I think you'll really enjoy it. As others have said, if you can do the Splash drop, I really believe you can do this one without much problem.

This is absolutely true! I never would have believed it, but yes, the front is easier than the back, which experiences the "whip" effect.
Now, on the other hand, the back seats get to see the Yeti for longer. The Yeti is a true thing of beauty!

Thanks everyone! I feel better knowing a little more about it. Now I will have to watch that video and then see if I can convince my DH to go... he is the same way as me!

Okay, EE has the scariest thing I've ever encountered on a roller coaster. If you get a chance, ride in the front seat. At one point you will ride backwards, stop and then go forward again. At the point where you stop, just before you go forward, look at the actual track in front of you. You will see a whole portion of it ROLL OVER so that you can go forward! All I could think was "I HOPE THAT LINES UP CORRECTLY!!". :rotfl:

OMG! I just watched the video. I feel like I can handle everything except perhaps the backwards part in the darkness... it seemed to go on forever, and those screams! I can't stand not being able to see what the track looks like at that part! You guys have given probably the best description I can get though. Well, wish me luck!:scared1:

Great video!!!! Does anyone know if there are any big hills or drops in the dark parts?

Honestly, most of the screams are of surprise and glee.

Spoiler warning!

The reverse part in the dark feels like some tightly banked circles (not loops, there are no inversions). I envision them to be very similar to the few turns right after the final 'big' drop, about 2 or 3 times in a tight, off centered circle. I think the dark part is pretty much like this but inside in the dark. It does not jerk you around back and forth in the dark like RnR or those type rides. It's smooth but fast.

Man I can't wait 6 months to get back on it!

You have all convinced me to ride it this summer without fear!!

Soo... is the 'big drop' going backwards?

I can take Spash mountain, so might have to try this one.
