Ever use "New skin" to close a wound?

I cut my finger rather deeply slicing a hunk of french bread. It's quite a "flap" of skin. (it's also right up against the fingernail) I remembered that I have liquid skin glue. It seems to be working, now that the bleeding has stopped. Is there any disadvantage to closing up the wound this way? Not sure if I should get stitches. Since it's not bleeding, I'm thinking I'll be OK.

Liquid Skin is not for closing up deep wounds. The Liquid Skin is mostly a waterproof coveing over an area. If you need stitches, you need stitches. The Liquid Skin is not going to hold an area together to close it. It peels or falls off after a while. It also abrades off.

However, if it has stopped bleeding, that's a good thing. But, if it doesn't stay closed and keeps bleeding, I'd say go get stitches. Or try putting a Bandaid over the New Skin to hold it closed.

It works pretty well for "flap" or "gouge" type cuts; things that run parallel to the surface of the skin. Not so good for deep cuts.

WARNING: It STINGS like the dickens!

A few years ago, on the first day of a beach vacation, DH clipped his heel with the pool gate at our hotel. It left a u-shaped flap, and he really was adamant that he didn't want to have to stay off the sand. (Let it be said that I argued for having it stitched, but he refused.) I slathered that cut with New Skin as if it were shellac -- really thickly. By the next day he was functioning just fine on it. I did have to re-coat it several times during the trip to keep the coating thick, because it wore away each day.
(When you put on a new coat of the stuff it works as a solvent on the old coat; kind of time-consuming to get reapplied right.)

I have used it for deep cuts.
works ok

DD split her chin open. Took her to ER. By the time they got around to seeing her the bleeding had almost stopped. ER doctor said they would try this. If it worked, great! If not, stitches. It worked! I remember using this stuff on my thumb when I used to bowl. Try it, if it doesn't work, head to the ER. Good luck!

I tried New Skin and it works but STINGS. I just use super glue now and it doesn't sting and stays on better.

ER doc told me he used it for his kids instead of stitches.

DH insisted I use it on a deep thigh cut he got recently...it worked, but it certainly doesn't look pretty. He should have gotten the stitches, it was such a deep wound. But he didn't care what it looked like, and was too stubborn to go to the dr.

OP here - I found some steri-strips, so after the second coat of New Skin dried, I added a wide steri-strip to help it stay closed. Seems to be working. I plan on using a band-aid over it during the day, since it hurts when I bump it.

We're going to DH's company party on Friday night & I was going to get a manicure. No sense getting 9 fingers "done up". I'd rather not draw attention to the "band-aided" one.

Soooo....I called my doctor's office to see what they think. But my doctor doesn't do stitches, so they told me to call Urgent Care - I called UC and they can see me at 6PM. I called my insurance to see how much this'll cost me. Turns out, I'll pay $100 for a facility fee and then 30% of the approved doctor's fee. Funny how once I found out how much it'll cost makes me have second thoughts. So I think I'll call my doctor's office back and see if I can just come in & get a tetanus shot. Since they have no record of one for me, I'm due for it.

arrgghhhh......all this for a cut finger!

You have to clean it to keep infection from being a big problem. Hydrogen peroxide maybe? Alcohol, if someone can really accept pain? Gotta clean it, don't you?

It's essentially clear nail polish...and as others have mentioned, it BURNS like Hades.

First part of this is correct but keep it clean with mild soap and water. Do not use hydrogen peroxide or alcohol on it just plain soap and water. Then change the bandage everyday. I work in a doctors office and this is what they tell all the patients with small lacerations. Also most places won't stitch up a lacteration of that size if it's older then 12 hours. Has to do with bacteria already built up in the cut.

A tetanus shot is a must if you haven't had one within the past 8-10 years.
