Ever use a consumer advocate from newspaper or TV?

I'm still sweating our flight from San Francisco to Orlando in October. In March, Virgin America Airlines announced their SFO - MCO route, starting in August. We bought for October (non-stop! - heaven!) Then in May they pushed the start date to October. We don't know when to just cancel the flights we've booked and book connecting flights on another airline.

A few days ago, I posted over on the Transportation Board and got a great tip on a cheap Delta flight, but got cold feet.

Earlier today I E-mailed the local paper about the situation. (maybe someone "in the know" can get a better answer than I've gotten from VA) The person E-mailed back, asking for more info, so I'll see if she can get any further.

My point is: have you ever gotten help from the consumer alert people in the media? Our local TV Stations will mediate disputes between the consumer and a company. Mine isn't a dispute, so much as getting a solid answer.

It seems to me that these folks look for issues that they can do a good tease for, to get folks to watch the six o'clock news. Until they actually cancel your flight and leave you high-and-dry, I suspect it might be hard to get anyone to be too concerned about the potential that the airline won't get you to Orlando for vacation.
