Ever tune up your own car?

I used to, back when cars were user-serviceable. I have the whole Sears tune-up kit from the '70s.

Now I change my own oil, plugs, brake pads and stuff but I leave the rest to my mechanic.

Yikes! Never.. I'm afraid to fill it up at the pump by myself! I consider myself to be somewhat smart, but I still manage to do some rather questionable things on accident.

Sure, tune ups, oil changes, fixed a flat tire just yesterday. I'll admit to leaving any electrical wiring items to the pros, something about that that always goes hinkey for me.

That sounds familiar. I think if given the chance you and I should not be left alone anywhere, lol.

Like Squirtz said, there was a time doing all sorts of work on your car was pretty easy. You could open the hood and see everything, and sometimes even have room to climb in and do the work. A basic set of mechanic's tools did everything you needed to do. Heck, you could even reach up behind the dashboard to do work there. Then, one day I opened the hood on my new car and had no idea what I was looking at.

Sometimes even the driveway!!

Changing plugs on most new cars last a heck of a lot longer than they used to. On my lat car (Chevy) the plugs are to be changed every 100,000 miles. I changed them once in 5 years. Brakes on that car were very easy and waaaaay cheaper than having it done at a shop. Even my wife's Honda is easy. I'm not to sure about me new car, a Hyundai Sonata.

On new cars there isn't really anything to "tune". It's more just replace parts when they go bad. Cars will give a check engine light when something is wrong. Some chain auto parts store will let you use their scanner to see what's wrong and then you can decide to put the part on yourself or at the shop.

I guess California and Washington are states that don't allow people to pump their own gas. Otherwise how do you find a gas station with an attendant to pump it for you? I can't even remember the last time I saw an attendant there to pump the gas.

I just meant that I'm totally accident prone and a space cadet!

Can't pump your own gas in NJ either. Seems stupid to me.

I used to. Today's cars need to be hooked up to computers for their tune up. I can still check and do some general things but I choose not to. I'm too old to lay on the ground to save $20.

Nope, NJ and OR are the only states that have attendants pump gas.
