that got a bit too carried away????

I have been chatting with this guy friend (who was just an acquaintence when he lived here and has now been transferred 7 hours away) online and it started as kidding fun, to a bit flirtatous but still innocent and has now gotten a bit carried away. I am not sure how to bring it back to friendly conversation. We have mutual friends and I will see him next month when he comes home for a wedding. Severing all ties is not an option, we have too many common friends.

Been doing the online thing for a long time, so yeah, that's happened once or twice. Honestly, the best way to do it is to be upfront with him. Let him know that you weren't meaning it to get that far and what kind of level you are really comfortable with. If he is a great friend, he'll understand and not cross the line again. If he has issues with your honesty, then sadly I would say he wasn't much a friend in the first place.

Yeah, but he knew I was just kidding and that I'd never date him in real life, so I guess that doesn't count.

I agree. Just be up front and tell him honestly. If he's a good friend, he will understand.

Be sure and tell him as soon as possible. Approach it with--there's something I need to talk to you about, and then tell him that you wanted to be sure you didn't send him the wrong signals when you were talking. That way, you can break him gently and he'll have time to move on before coming to town.
