Well, something that I dread doing is shopping for "the perfect dress". Especially one I know I will only wear once that's going to cost a fortune. For some strange reason yesterday I was in the mood to do just that so I seized the moment. Off to the mall I went and of course get discouraged real quick.

I was just about to give up and in Lord & Taylor I found a beautiful dress for $100.00 on the clearance rack. And it actually looks great!!!

It seems this weekend all the formal wear is on sale in most of the "high-end" stores and when I asked about this they say it is because the are clearing exsisting inventory to make way for the X-Mas/New Year Formal Wear. The selection of semi-formal was great (of course, since that wasn't what I was looking for) and the every thing formal was at least 25% off, most more of a discount.

Just an FIY if you looking for a good deal on that dress you hate to spend a fortune on.

I bought 2 formals for $55.00. All the summer dresses were 75% off.

I've been haunting the local thrift stores for formal or semi-formal dresses in size 20. Believe me, there are dozens to chose from if you are small but in a 20? NO WAY!

Well, I took some donations over a couple weeks ago, and thought I'll just run through - since my hubby was waiting in the car - surely they won't have any here, either. WRONG! a beautiful purple one with cap sleeves AND a deep purple velvet one with long sleeves. What's a girl to do? BUY BOTH, of course! $40 for two!

Now, I think I'll start hunting for a leather coat.

Try encorepageantapparel.com

They have a women's size 18-30 section. There are also Cocktail wear and evening wear sections as well as children's wear.

Don't be bothered by pageant in the name :)

I bought a gown (actually 2 b/c I couldn't choose) for a formal wedding..I think I didn't spend more than 80 bucks. They found an error--some minor damage on the dresses that they didn't post on the web-site and then discounted my order. I later added to it and used it in a production of My Fair Lady for the ball scene.

Most if not all dresses and accessories are consigned (as the ones I bought)--they will usually list if there are any problems with the gowns and price accordingly (and if they make an error, they will credit you or let you cancel the order). They do have several item new with tags as well.

Nice return policy--I was able to return one of the gowns that didn't work out--can't remember if they sent me a shipping label or not.

BUYER TIP--check all sections even if it refers to stage or show--you never know what you might find in your size at a discount ::yes:: .

I found a classic black sleeveless formal in a large size at ROSS for $29.99 :earseek: I hate going shopping, but I was very happy! Topped with a shawl I found at Steinmart, I am set. Dh did even better with cruise type shirts as well as slacks at Marshall's, Nordstrom's Rack, Marshall's and Ross.

Now if only I could find a swimsuit that looked good and fit (and made me look 50 lbs. lighter).

I buy mine at Dillards, they have a good selection of plus size dresses. I take a 16, but the plus sizes fit better.
Davis's Bridal also has a nice selection of plus size formal wear, very inexpensive too!
