I was at Target this morning and as I was walking toward the toiletries area I heard a woman say, VERY loudly, "Mamamamama". I thought, "What the heck?" Then I hear a baby's voice saying over and over, "Dadadadada". :teeth: The mom then says, "No, Mamamamama"; really loud. The baby boy said, "Dadadada". People were staring and laughing a few aisles over and mom didn't even notice it, the baby boy was probably about 6 to 8 months. This went on back and forth between them, when the baby said "Dada", Mom said, "No, mamamama". :teeth: :teeth: Other women were giggling, but mom carried on saying "Mamamamama" very loudly as she pushed the baby in the shopping cart. :teeth: He was getting frustrated and kept saying "Dadadada" over and over...

It was really funny!

It goes to show that even babies want to be heard and show their "independence". ::yes::

LOL!

I think my DD Emily said every name of everyone around her before she said Mama. Saved the best for last, I guess.

Denae :sunny:

I am totally laughing because I have this conversation with my one year old DD every day (although never in Target! LOL!). It's actually kind of weird because she was saying both ma-ma and da-da up until about a month ago. Now we're just both dada. When I say no I'm mama, she just looks at me, smiles and shakes her head no. I think she knows exactly what she's doing! :p

Sandy, I like those smilies.

The mom looked a little wacky, saying "Mamamama" as loud as she was. I wonder if I look "wacky" when I'm out with my kids? :scratchin :scratchin :teeth: Never mind...;)

It was really funny, you had to be there. ::yes:: :teeth: :teeth:

This was SSSOOOOOOO!!! much better than what my 19mo old did to me in Wal-Mart!

We had recently returned from a trip out west and I was wearing a Yosemite sweatshirt with a silhouette of a deer on the front. We were in Wal-Mart, ds in the basket seat and me pushing the cart around when he suddenly focused on the deer on my shirt...but he thought it was a "horse."

With great excitement and enthusiasm, he began pointing right at my chest and in his best loud, excited toddler voice began to announce so all could hear, "Mom--hor; Hor--Mom--Hor." (He hadn't quite mastered the phonics skill of ending a word with an "s") I was mortified and began in an equally loud voice to correct, "Hor-SEE, Hor-SEE! It's a Hor-SEE! Say 'Hor-SEE' "

<sigh> He's taller than me now...we've laughed about that day a few times over the years.

OMG - you must have just wanted to hide!

My seven month old niece has been visiting us with my brother while my SIL is in Hawaii on business. She can't say m's yet but she does say DaDa sometimes. She was looking at pictures of her mother and saying DaDa DaDa over and over again. It was cute.

My other sister in law was as insistent with her oldest daughter that she say mama. She even made up a song that had lots of m's in it to get her to cooperate!

Teachingmyown, I had a similar moment when my now 12 yr. son was about 2 yrs. old. At that age, he was fascinated with clocks, but he couldn't make the "cl" sound.:teeth: I had taken him to get a haircut at a new salon, and as soon as we walked in he pointed to the clock and as loud as he could, he said, "Clock!" He just left out the "l"...

Let's just say that he made his presence known. ;) ;) :faint: :faint: Of course, I did the same thing that you did, "That's right, it's a clock!".:teeth:

Don't ask me about the word fork. :faint: ;)

:D :D :D

My Mom said it was just desserts as when I was little and we were out shopping, (before the days of shopping malls...) I would stand on the street corner, holding her hand and gleefully point out all the trucks that were passing, saying "Mom--(tr)uck...Look, Mom, (tr)uck!"

Only problem was, I consistently substituted the "f" sound for the "tr" sound, as in "see the bird up in the fee..."

What goes around, you know...
:)

I've been trying to get DS to say "mama" and 'dada' for months. He won't say it. All he'll say is "Hi!". Seriously. Clearly, loudly, softly, whatever he's in the mood for right at the moment. He'll stare up at you and smile and go "HI!"

TOV

Personally, I think for all they lack verbal skills, these kids know what they're doing. I'm single, never married and adopted my DD so she doesn't have anyone to call "dada" or similar name. That didn't stop her from saying it on several store visits to any man that walked by. She'd also sometimes just start yelling it out like she was trying to find him. Luckily, I found it amusing and sometimes just joined her.

This is less embarassing than the time Sam imitated the obnoxious Herbal Essence commerical in the shampoo aisle at WalMart. Complete with the moaning, yelling 'yes' and banging his hands on the cart handle. He was about 3. I still cringe thinking about the looks I got from the other people nearby.
