I just bought my 9 year old his most expensive sneakers - Etney's -, black with the green E. $50

Life was so much less when he was 3 and I bought the character sneakers from Walmart for $14.

These sneakers were important to him cuz all his friends are wearing them too. Two years ago it was Skechters-sp?, now Etneys, what next?

:dog2:

LOL, I know...my oldest DD had to have the White Etnies with the hot pink E and now both DDs in junior high want the brown ones with the light pink E. They also each have a pair Phat Farms...(or is Phat Pharms?) :confused3 Luckily the 2 little ones were perfectly content to have Bratz and Barbie shoes princess:
I don't buy them every little thing they ask for but if I can afford it, I do try to get them a few items that they really have their hearts set on for school ~ and I have to say that the Etnies and Phat Farms are still in awesome shape months later while the character shoes have taken quite a beating so I think it all evens out moneywise.

Never heard of either and I have teenage daughters!

2 of my kids like the good old Converse sneakers. Middle DD runs so I am always buying her good running sneakers...they run a lot more than $50.00.
So far I've been lucky, my kids aren't too much into name brand shoes....now clothes, that's another story all together! :earseek:

Yes, Stacy, I too don't buy them everything they want, my DS doesn't have any game videos stuff and he really had his "heart set on these sneakers" so I had the "love" for him in buying these sneakers.

Never heard of Phat farms

I've never heard of them but all my daughters sneakers cost close to 50.00 since she was a baby! I won't put payless or anything like that on her feet so we always shop at stride rite and they all seem to be 45+ for every pair.

Actually, $50 is not too bad for something like that. Usually if they want a certain sneaker like that, we make some sort of deal, like you pay half and I'll pay half. My middle son bought his Vans with his birthday money.

I miss the Payless and Kmart shoe days. They have such cute styles, especially character shoes. My oldest son had a cute pair of Muppet high tops.

My DS11 got his first pair of Etnies a few months ago. The saleperson said that they are not to be used for running because they are Skateboard shoes. :earseek: The bottoms are made to grip to surfaces. My son loves his shoes. Now we have to go buy some basketball shoes.

My youngest DS (17) is a skateboarder so his sneakers always are Etnies, Circa, Osiros etc. $50 isn't bad, we've had some up to $90. It could be worse, it could be air Jordans and be $200+!!!!! :earseek:

My DD started with the Etnie's when she was about 12. Her second pair was the Phat Farm, and we just ordered a pair of Circa's from Zappo's. $50 is good--was that the children's size? My DD wears and adult women's size and they run anwhere from $59 to $69. I just paid $63.00 for the Circa's. I don't mind so much anymore because her foot has stopped growing.

My kids wanted Adio's for skateboarding. I bought each of them a pair. Less than three weeks later, the pair I got for the older one were falling apart!
Thinking to myself that 80.00 shoes should last more than three weeks, I took them back to the store (Pac-Sun).
Do you know they had to the nerve to tell me that there was nothing unreasonable about these shoes falling apart in that short time?!?!
First, they told me that the fact that the rubber had worn through on the bottom was from him dragging his foot when he rides his board--OK, then why is it happening to both shoes??? Most skateboarders (and he is no exception) usually skate from one side--thus one shoe should show more wear than the other. Additionally, I pointed out, the other skateboards a whole lot more than the one with the bad shoes, so his should be showing more wear if it were from skateboarding and they were fine. Then, I showed them where the box of the shoe on top was completely unsewed and I could put two fingers through the gap. I asked if they thought he rode with the sole of his foot upward. (Yes, I made a show of myself).
In the end, they exchanged them (unhappily, I might add). This time he got a pair of Etnies and they seem to be holding up much better.

I've never heard of Etnies. My son wants Reeboks or Addidas, and they always end up costing $69.99 or more. I'd be happy if he picked a $50 pair! But I understand your thoughts behind your post ~~ I too remember when a $15 pair from Target with a picture of Power Rangers or something on them was a hit.

Some of the kids have them around here, but our town is pretty casual when it comes to clothing. Name brands aren't that big of a deal to most of the kids around here. They like the current styles but not so much the "brands". A lot of that probably comes from the limited shopping we have available. My kids have never asked me to buy a specific brand of anything, except toothpaste :rotfl: . I am sure that will change, but for now it is nice.

lol -
I had said NO to buting the sneakers -
then I read an article about how important at the tween age it feels to be 'in' with what is popular...
and that if you can afford it - then it is ok to do it basically.
we went to buy a pair (man she was sooo excited)
she picked Black and Pink,
of course sneakers were buy one get one half off at Olympia when we went so I just HAD to get her the DC brand in whilte with blue too

DD9 has black with pink E that she wears every day except gym days- she has Nike's for those, because the Etnies do not bend, and are pretty flat you cant really run correctly with them...

DD8 wants Nike Shox....yeah that's gonna hapen :rotfl2:

My kids (teens) have Etnies and K-Swiss. They seem to be the popular brands around here this year.

Phat Farms was last year in our area.

My DD(almost 13) has two pairs of sneakers. One pair is New Balance and were just over $100  , the other pair I found at Payless(Champion?) :goodvibes ! They both fit her fine. I was shocked that we found a cheap pair at Payless. Her feet are *very* slender, I've always had to get her Narrow Width sneakers/tennis shoes/dress shoes. When she was younger, I could only find her shoes at Stride-Rite or buy New Balance. We could never find *anything* at K-Mart or Target, etc., most of their shoes were sized too wide.

agnes!
