Etiquette Question regarding Housewarming

How does she go about letting guests know what she could use?

Housewarmings are about warming the house with your guests presence, not their presents.

Want she wants to do is throw herself a shower. I've never heard of throwing yourself a shower when you buy a home.

I have had one housewarming party, and been to a couple of them. I concur with pervious posters: the gifts are generally small tokens, like candles, a bottle of wine, plant, baked goods in a nice dish/basket. I brought bottles of wine to the ones I went to, and at my own I received candles, wine, a covered pie dish (with a home-baked pie) and a stuffed collie (from my sister who knows I love collies) - not linens and flatware.

Really there's no good, non-tacky way to do that.

About the best she can hope for is if someone asks you, her mother or another close person what she needs, you can say "Well, she needs a toaster, a coffeemaker, a set of queen size sheets, her bathroom is blue and she needs towels" and so forth...then it is you who are doing the suggesting and not she who is doing the asking.

Generally, housewarming gifts (at least in my neck of the woods) are thinks like candles, plants, wine, maybe some cute little cocktail napkins or a little gift basket with the makings for a spaghetti dinner or something....and that's if the person is really close to the new homeowner.
