We are leaving for Orlando on Mon and staying at All Star Sports. Do I need to bring anything besides ponchos? Should I bring flashlights? Will I be able to get water at the resort? Thanks. This is the first time I may experience a hurricane and am a bit nervous!

Bring a bucket :rotfl2: jk, I haven't been in a hurricance, but from reading past post from people that were there it sounds like you'll be fine. The resorts are excellent about taking care of people. Good luck to you!

definetly the flash light would be a good thing
we will be going down on wednesday. hopefully
the punch of mr. e won;t be too bad!!

The flashlight and an extra set of batteries might be a good idea, just in case. Also, extra pages of activities pages for the kids to do in case you have to stay in your room for the day. Or a couple of small travel games. Also, maybe a box of snacks, if room allows-in your bags.

Once you get there, you may want to get some bottled water, but I don't think your going to need much.

I've heard Disney takes care of it's guests, but I think anyone should be as prepared as they can.

Go, you will be fine.

Small mag light type flashlight and extra batteries are a good idea, not to bulky, small for the suitcase, yet enough in case you need them. The resort will have water available, but you might want to pack some snacks.

Don't worry too much about it. Disney is really good about taking care of their guessts during Hurricanes. Just keep an eye on the news. the 5 day forecast is so unpredictable, this still has the potential to go anywhere.

In the past, the resorts passed out flashlights. They will tell you to stock up on water and snacks. The gift shops will have some bottled water, but it may be in demand. The thing to remember is that it doesn't last that long. Disney is excellent about getting things back open and running. Following Charley, Frances and Jeanne, most of the parks were open the next day. We stayed at AKL during Frances and never lost power. As soon as the worst of the storm is over, they will reopen the food courts. They just don't want you out during the height of the storm due to the possibility of flying debris.

On the bright side, the park attendance is usually extremely light just before a hurricane and the day after. We went to Epcot the day Frances hit. We went in the morning and stayed until about 3pm. We started feeling the first effects of Frances about 6pm. It was like having Epcot all to ourselves. We went on TT three times in a row. They didn't make us leave the car. It was great! If it happens, take advantage of the situation to have one relaxing day in your room and then enjoy!

And, if you are driving in, and are staying at moderates or above, you will have a fridge. So, I would stock up on a few sandwich items, water, and such and take it with you along with the flashlights and ponchos. And, fill up the tank for the return home when you get there.
Those seemed to be the biggest items mentioned during some of the threads the last two years that hurricanes have gone through there.
On and Good Luck!

Keep in mind that you will be confined to your hotel room for the duration of the worst of the winds and rain. The length of time will depend on the direction of, and how fast, the hurricane is moving. It could be as little as 2 hours, but most likely will be 6-12 hours. So, plan to bring anything you might need or want during that time. We have been through several hurricanes here where we live, so I personally would make sure I had a couple of flashlights, extra batteries, small battery operated radio, snacks, a light lunch or dinner, a few bottles of water, magazines, a good book, and anything the children would enjoy playing with while confined to the room. Before the storm hits, charge all your electronic items such as cell phones, laptop computers, iPods, hand-held games, etc. in case you lose electricity. Fill your ice bucket, too.

With that said, as posted before, Disney truly does a wonderful job of taking care of their guests. Two years ago, they provided flashlights for every room. They also played Disney movies on several channels and made boxed meals available for a nominal charge. None of Disney property lost electricity even though all the areas around them did.

During Charlie and Francis, my DS was on the "ride-out" crew that spent the whole time in the Magic Kingdom helping to prepare the park for the storm and then cleaning up afterward. Cast members throughout the Walt Disney World resort worked all through the night each time to insure that all guests were as comfortable as possible and so all the parks could open as soon as possible after the storm. They did a tremendous job. Kudos to Disney and the cm's! :cool1:

Thanks for the good advice. We are flying out tomorrow. First I had to worry about flying out with NWA and now I have to worry about a hurricane.

I guess I should be remembering "Hakuna Mata."

We fly from Cali on Thursday. I know we can get into denver but what are the odds on thursday getting into Orlando. Usually they don't get it that bad so I am thinking we will be fine, but...

We always pack a flashlight when we travel, you never know when you might need it.
Since your staying at All Stars and no fridge you may want to consider a collapsable cooler that you can bring in your suitcase. That way you could have some food in your room for sandwiches or even milk and cereal. Another option would to put in an order through wegoshop or greengrocer for basic supplies and add a styrofoam cooler to the list, you could just leave that behind when you return home as the cost is small or maybe even pass it on to another guest.
Definiatly have something to keep your family busy in your room.

Hopefully you will have no problems, we have been to WDW during hurricanes and we went with a positive attitude, a good poncho and water shoes and enjoyed the parks dispite the rain and had no waits for anything.

We never lost power in POR. We popped some popcorn in the food court and watched movies in the room during the worst of the storm. WDW was great. They made sure we had everything we needed to ride out the storm. Charging all your cell phones etc is a great idea. Fill your ice bucket and a few bags with ice. Buy some juices, pop, and water to keep in your room along with some snacks and you will be good to go. WDW did tell us to keep the drapes closed and to stay away from the windows during the storm. The food courts opened up the next day and the parks the day after The pools were closed for quite a few days after the hurricane due to braches and other debris in the water. I don't think they were open again while we were there (5 days). I felt bad for many of the CM' s who stayed and didnt know how their own homes had made out. WDW put quite a bit of people from the camp ground into POR. We also had quite a few electricians staying there. They were from the surrounding areas and had been brought in to help with the power. You know how people come together after a snow storm etc. well, that is how it was. Everyone was extra nice. we found people were all talking together about the storm. It was not bad at all.

Just wondering, do the resorts have emergency generators if the electricity goes out? Or will I be in the dark with cold water for showers for the duration?

Very seldom does the power go out for long periods of time. Should it, the generators will be for emergency lighting only. More than likely the hot water heaters are gas, so you will probably have hot water. Believe me, if it gets bad enough to have no power at Disney for a long period of time, you won't be worrying about a shower.

Disney resorts are extremely well built, that said you can certainly make some advance planning that will help if you need it.

First and most important, a good attitude. Disney can not control Mother Nature. You would be suprised how rude some guests act during these situations. It was horrible to watch. Be flexible and kind to the CMs, remember they are having to work and worry about homes and family and pets.

Flashlight and batteries. Yes Disney has been known to provide them in the past but don't count on it. Games, etc for the kids. Being stuck in your room for hours can seem like forever.

Snacks etc. You can bring these or purchase them before the storm. Just do not wait the day of and expect to find anything to buy.

Watch the weather channel for updates. During Charley, you would not believe how many guests were upset and commenting they had no idea a storm was coming.

Enjoy the experience. Not many people get to experience a hurricane at Disney.

Guys, don't "freak out" while at the resorts and parks. Things are very safe there. :thumbsup2
