Anyone watch ER last night? That had to be one of the most depressing episodes ever. Why can't even one person be happy on this show????

I was crying with Carrie and Korday all thru that surgery and the ending! I knew it was coming but it was still horrible.

DH predicted the ending before it happened, but it still was hard to deal with. I really thought she was going to live.

My dh predicted it too, before the opening credits even. I didn't want to believe it, I really hoped she'd live. It was so sad, excellent acting last night. Watching Kerry bang on the door at the end was heartbreaking.


On the other hand however, they have done the fallen firefighter/paramedic (Shep's partner) and the dead parent custody battle (Benton) already, so I thought maybe they'd try a different direction.

Was last night the final episode? I have never seen them write two characters off in the middle of the season. What's up with that? Peggie

I don't think last night was the final. They always have new episodes for May sweeps.

I guess they'll have a major custody battle now. It was a very sad ending and really depressed me. Sometimes I wish something GOOD would happen on that show.

Carrie Weaver's partner, Sandy died in surgery after getting hurt on the job. The worst part is that her family wouldn't let Carrie see their son.

I also figured Sandy would die or else end up in a coma or something, bringing on the child custody thing. Or more accurately, the gay rights custody thing. Benton's custody battle was a "traditional" one...so now ER wants to try something edgier. The non-biological parent in a lesbian partnership has no rights to the child at all (although I'm sure this may vary by state - here only the bio parent has rights. The partner is legally no more than a girlfriend. Like if a heterosexual single mom has a boyfriend, the boyfriend has no legal rights to her child. Did that make sense? ) Also, I'm making NO comment at all about that lifestyle, just the fact that I think ER is going to be making a statement about this issue as Carrie may not have a legal leg to stand on when fighting for custody. I'm sure it will be interesting.

But I'm with everyone else - why can't any of the characters be happy?

PS - I almost didn't post this as I don't want to turn this thread into a debate about anything. I was only discussing the issue as presented on the show.

I predicted that ending based on the previews from the week before that showed Sandy being brought in. Very predictable but still sad.

Once Sandy died, I knew that there would be a bitter custody battle for their son. Since I've been stuck at home for the past 6 weeks, I've been watching 2 hours of ER reruns every weekday. I don't know why I keep watching them. I've seen at least two episodes where they set someone's broken ankle. That alone makes me cringe.

Do you think that it would kill the writers to have ONE happy person in the ER???

I didn't really consider Peter's custody battle to be traditional. The mother died and he was battling her husband for custody, then it was also brought up that the child might not even be his biologically. Luckily Peter won his, so he had the happy ending, we'll see what happens here.

I saw it coming but it made me worry about gay couples who have babies. One is usually the biological parent - the other adopts. In our state it takes 6 months for an adoption to become final. If the biological parent would die before the baby was 6 months old, the other parent could certainly lose custody.
