I have been doing research on DCL and came upon a review that stated a young girl was refused entry to the kids club with her diabetic bag because it contained needles. It was also stated that they said they could/would not keep it at the front desk of the kids club. My son carries and Epipen with him at all times due to a tree nut allergy. Has anybody had an experience like this with on DCL?

I believe they will keep it at the check-in desk. I haven't heard of anyone denied access, just reminders to parents to be sure and pick-up the Epipen when picking up their kid. Make sure your reservation is noted that your son carries an Epipen.

For diabetic supplies/meds -- they may prefer that a parent be called to assist with administering. Assuming we're talking insulin or Byetta or such, it's a med to be dosed at certain times unlike an Epipen used for immediate life-saving measures. There are no cubbies or place for a child to store anything brought into the Club/Lab, and if they place it down there is risk another child could touch it.

Enjoy your cruise!

It was the exact opposite for us...they would not let DD in to the club without her EpiPen. They kept it in a locked cupboard at check in. They gave it back when she checked out.

I am wondering if the diabetic meds were actual syringes and not auto injectors like EpiPen...like they could not be responsible for a needle and measuring the correct dosage?

For Epi-Pens: first off, and extra waiver has to be signed before the epi-pen can be accepted and the epi-pen must be in date or it cannot be accepted. The epi-pen must also be kept at the front desk - child's details will be stuck on and a note in the system so it moves with them on any transitions or when they check out.
I don't know why you were denied access without it, at the end of the day it's your choice. I see many children checked in who sometimes bring their epi-pen and sometimes don't. However, only epi-pens can be accepted, no Benadryl etc...

As for diabetic kits: if the child can test themselves and self administer the things they need then the diabetic kit can be kept on them. They will usually be given a drawstring bag to keep it in, but they must keep it on them at all times. If a child cannot do it for themselves then it must be kept with the parents, who are welcome to come and test at any point in the family bathroom. However, as always no food that the child may need can be bought into the space. With diabetes kits, there are many varieties/ needs and its best to talk to a Counselor/ manager first and they can work out what it best together.

Thank you for your insight. It sounded odd and I assumed it would be fine but before putting out that kind of money, I wanted to get some additional information.

My daughter's allergy reaction plan is Benadryl (she's just a year old). Will that be able to stay in her diaper bag or have to go with us? No biggie either way, I'm just curious.

Unfortunately no. The only medication counsellors are allowed to administer is epipens.

The only medication allowed into the YA spaces are epipens, inhalers and in some cases diabetic kits.

Just come to the club with him the first time he goes. The counselor may ask you to sign a form or need the information that comes with the prescription.

As for the diabetic kit, any number or things could have happened including the counselor being confused about what to do with it. If they did they wrong thing they probably go in some trouble for it.
