Entertainment walls?

We have an alcove in our living room and considering an entertainment wall for this alcove. It will be a perfect fit and will hold a plasma TV. The other option is mounting a plasma TV in this alcove with an entertainment credenza underneath the TV. I'm just not sure how popular entertainment walls are? Which would you prefer, the entertainment wall or entainment credenza with TV mounted on wall? Our living room is 20X20 with 10ft ceiling. I need to make this choice soon. Thanks!

Bueller?? :lmao:

I'm not a fan of a lone TV mounted on a wall or on a stand (depending on the size of course). We have an entertainment center that holds everything. It has doors that can (but they are never) close. If you have the room and like the look, go for it!

Thanks Charade! I just don't want to put a monstrosity in my living room, lol. Does anyone else like entertainment walls for their TV's? TIA

We got one from Pottery Barn for our basement and love it! It holds the plasma tv perfectly on its stand. Overall, I'm not a big fan of entertainment centers, especially old-fashioned looking ones, but this one I like. Heres the picture from the pottery barn website.

all i can offer up is if you do a built in type job, and have any intent on selling the house down the line, make sure the thing is built such to fit the next largest common size of tv (we saw too many houses that had custom jobs that no way fit most of the standard size models on the market). also consider if the wall adjoins a bedroom-one of the problems with some of these "alcoves" is that by virtue of eating up wall space (depth wise) they are'nt as well insulated as adjoining walls-so the sound travels right into the bedroom. one of our neighbors put some sound insulation on top of the existing wall and then did new sheet rock on top of it to help with the issue.

Thanks for the picture Minnie. That looks very similar to the one DH has his eye on.

Good point Barkley about sound insulation. I will look into that.

Dioes anyone else like entertainment walls? More importantly, does anyone hate them? Let me know because I'm not sure what I'm doing!

I would love more opinions on entertainment walls. Like them or hate them? TIA

Just a lone opinion here, but I think the whole "hang the TV on the wall" thing seems ultramodern, and if thats what you like, go for it. To me, it would be preferable where space is an issue. In our house, we have the cabinets. One for the TV and such with a bookcase/knickknack holder on each end. Wifey loves putting all her stuff in it.

Thanks jimboinlimbo! I watch fix it shows and they seem to remove entertainment walls right and left. They say it is all your eye will see, dominates the room etc, etc.. DH wants this wall so maybe I will let him get it? Still deciding here. Something deep inside screams NO about these entertainment walls. this is why I need to hear positive comments! Thanks for the replys! I need to make up my mind soon!

IMO wall mounted TV' only make sense if that is all you are going to have or there is another space in the wall for the other equipment. The other equipment being a decent surround sound receiver (the good ones are still quite large and deep) and a HDTV receiver at a minimum. A lto of people get a plasma, hang it ont he wall, and then still have the space taken up by the other pieces under the TV. It's one of the reasons I went with a DLP box with a stand for the equipment.

The other thing to consider is what your set up will be like for surround sound. Unless of course you don't want that, but IMO the big picture is nothing without big sound.
