I am trying to understand the term "kool-aid drinkers."

I do not read political blogs.. I try to keep myself to the Dis, sometimes it is safer way. I do watch the news, actually am a news junkie.....so in saying that, are those using that term referencing the Jonestown Massacres and if so those using that term use it to describe all Conservatives?

I just need to understand.

political cliche. Often means Conservatives have closed their eyes to the real agenda of the Bush adminstration and the neo-cons; "drinking the kool-aid" is accepting without question the stated reasons behind the war on terror, war in Iraq and other things. Deeper in the political opposition camp, it's also used to descibe conservatives in general whom they consider to be committing a kind of joint national suicide - abandoning the Constitution, leaning toward Fascism and that sort of thing - and here anyone supporting Bush is a kool-aid drinker. So it depends.

Thanks TeeJay, fellow MA Diser.. so the national suicide somewhat is reflecting what happened in Jonestown?? They followed him in his teachings and drank the kool-aid, dying, and therefore those who follow Bush, are in sense drinking the kool-aid.. Loosely?

I corrected, thanks to Puffy.... :)

I think you meant Jonestown.

I think the term "kool-aid drinkers" could apply to anyone who blindly follows the doctrine (or political thought) of any leader or sect without questioning. Just like the Jonestown people.

Actually, it's not necessarily "conservative" exclusive. It can be used to describe any person, or group that blindly follows a leader or a belief no matter the final outcome or how it affects them or the world around them.

Oops.. I did mean Jonestown.. I will correct that..Not enough coffee...I did have it correct in my first post..

Also, here, though when we are referencing it, we are inferring those who follow the Conservative political thought or those who follow George Bush....we are not talking in generalities here, we are being specific in the use of the term...

Am I wrong??

I can't name another leader this applies to in 2005 mainstream politics. I may be missing something. Everything has its blind followers, but they're usually just called "blind followers" or something.

Not conservative political thought, necessarily...it can be anything...

There are people here on the Dis Resorts threads that will defend their choice of resort and dismiss any negative opinions about their favorites, no matter how valid. They could also be considered Kool Aid drinkers, as well. It isn't only used in reference to politics.

The term "Kool aid drinkers" has been around for a long time. Way longer than George Bush's run as President...he's in charge now, so it's obvious you hear it about him most.
